“Super Place to Stay!”
Reviewed January 9, 2014

Basic in many ways but Peter and Manichan were super hosts and couldn't help you enough. Their breakfast is huge and especially good are their home made jams. They arranged our elephant trip and their location is not far away from the main drag but yet far enough away so as to be a quiet retreat - especially their patio area. Pick up and drop off from the airport went without a hitch.

Room Tip: There are rooms around the patio as well as upstairs in the main house. I would recommend a room aro...

The initial booking process with Peter via e-mail was efficient and he organized the pickup from the airport without any glitch.

Peter can organize several activities for you, incl. visit to Elephant village, to Kuang Si and Tad Sae falls. We found very useful his services to purchase bus/minivan tickets to the next destination, and he can also help you to purchase a flight tickets at better price then the Lao airlines web site offers.

We spent first couple nights in a queen room no.2 where it was difficult to shut the door and the shower was not always hot.

For couple other nights we were upgraded to the King size room which is spacious, has a couch with storage space and very good shower.

Few additional pluses:
The location – it is very close to the morning and evening markets, it is far enough from the main tourist street, that we did not feel like part of the crowd, it is just one block from the river.
Peter has a safe, where we were able to leave our passports during the travels, the breakfast is excellent, 24/7 water, coffe and tea were appreciated.

Few things that did not always work: the free wifi’s signal had its ups and downs. The windows of our rooms were facing a street where there is a karaoke bar and on few occasions their patrons decided to stay late and have a loud conversation which is something Peter can not control, but it is good to be aware of.

Thank you for this positive review.
I would just like to inform the reader that our hot shower is always working, at least when I come to check it!! There is absolutely no karaoke bar behind the guesthouse. In the whole town there is not even one karaoke bar. It's just a neighbor who liked to play his music during the New Year days, during the day time!! So don't get any wrong ideas. Luang Prabang is usually very quiet after 10pm, and so is our courtyard! Thank you.

We stayed here for over a week in two separate stints in this busy guesthouse. Staying in the old city in Luang Prabang is highly recommended as most things to see are located here, as well as restaurants, markets and travel companies, and it is just a nice place to wander. Manichan is very conveniently located in the old city, close to the morning market, Food Alley, night market etc. Apart from location, its best feature is the central courtyard where breakfast is served, tea and coffee are available anytime and you can meet and chat with other guests. The double rooms are OK but relatively small, can have noise from the courtyard or the market lane over the back and our towels weren’t changed over a stay of 6 nights, but the breakfast is excellent, including the famous omelette.

However, we felt it didn’t quite live up to the open friendly nature extolled in earlier reviews – Peter and his wife were helpful enough when asked, booking buses etc, but there was a distant undertone. A batch of laundry was slower than promised (without letting us know – awkward if you need to pack), and like an earlier reviewer our booked transport from the airport was not there to meet us – we had to ring to check, then had a 45 minute wait (given Mel C’s experience we didn’t want to risk making our own way). As this service is more expensive than the airport service, we recommend just getting Peter to send his city map which clearly shows the guesthouse location (it is a bit tucked away), print it and show to your taxi/tuktuk from the airport.

First of all, we thank you for all the pros that you've written about and for all the fantastic reviews that we've had before from our beloved guests.
But, I feel that we should write some response to this review as I find it quite unbelievable that you have used one towel for 6 days!!! How could you except that from your side?? That's so mostly unbelievable for me to understand. Our policy is to change towels every 2 a 3 days and even on request : everyday!!!

We are very sorry about the delayed airport pick up. I have discussed this problem with our taxi driver and he promised to be more punctual in the future. He has been very popular and very busy with his "fancy" Tuktuk, therefore he might have been late 20 minutes, but mostly he's on time.
But just for the information of the critical reader : we charge 10.000 Kip more for the personal pick up, we're talking about 1.20 US$. For 1.20$ we write extra e-mails, we make minimum 1 telephone call (sometimes more, when there's a delay or a cancellation or a no-show-up), we make one A4 print with the name of the guest and make sure the driver gets it. Most of the time the taxi driver waits between 10 and 60 minutes for the guest to come out of the airport after the VISA formalities. Above all, for the same 1.20US$, our Taxi service (unlike the Airport Taxi service) is completely private (non-shared taxis), drops you off at the guesthouse, and takes your luggage to your room!! It's all about SERVICE!!
We try to return our laundry within 24 hours, on a sunny day it might be within 8 hours, on rainy days it might be only after 2 days ... this is Laos; no dryers!

We spent only one night at Manichan.
Pros: good location (but Luang Prabang is small so everywhere is good) and excellent breakfast.

Cons: I don't understand why other reviewers praise the atmosphere at manichan guesthouse. We were greeted as intruders on arrival, the owner made us feel very unwelcomed. Finally the room we had was not very clean.
After this night at Manichan,
we went to a much better guesthouse in Luang Prabang at the same price. So not a good value in our opinion.

I, Peter, feel truly sorry that you had me probably on a very, very bad mood when you checked in. My wife keeps complaining about it!!! I work 7 days a week, from 6am to late in the evening and things might go wrong sometimes. Manichan Guesthouse would not be the same with an impersonal receptionist... so all my guest have to deal with only one human being, and that's me and I'm not always perfect. So if I could give you a hug and say sorry right now, I would.

For the information of the reader, this guest had booked only one night. The next nights, we were already fully booked.

This guesthouse makes you love Luang Prabang even more. You will definitely find your yourself stayed longer than planned. Superb and excellent service, staffs, location, cleanliness, and common area.

Got a private room with bathroom for myself. After a long tiring 2 days slow boat journey from Thailand. :)

The owner, Mr Peter was really friendly and helpful. Please stay here if you wanna stay close to the night market, Phou Si hill, old palace and also riverside, you'll love it.

Room Tip: Book in advance as it always full.

We stayed five nights at this delightful old French Colonial guest house. It is on a quiet side street convenient to everything in Luang Prabang - half a block from the Mekong River and close to markets, temples, restaurants, shops and bicycle rentals.

Manichan, the young Laotian woman after whom the place is named, is a fine host, speaks passable English, a smattering of other languages and is full of information.

The best thing about the place is the breakfast - eggs however you want them along with a limitless supply of fresh fruit, muesli, yogurt, homemade bread, croissants, honey, butter, jam, tea and coffee. It is by far the best we have had at any lodging.

It is served at a common table under a thatched cover outdoors in the hotel courtyard, giving you a chance to meet other guests, share experiences and plan outings. We put together a day trip here to the unforgettable Kuangsi Waterfall, a must.

The rooms upstairs in the main house have high ceilings with fans and teak wood floors. They share a bath, but it is spacious with a huge shower worthy of much pricier lodging. Others rooms around the courtyard are en suite and many have air conditioning.

Manichan is a perfect place to kick back and enjoy one of Asia's most enchanting towns.

This review is quiet late but I have to write it to share our wonderful experience at Guesthouse Manichan. We booked two rooms directly on their website and and Peter, the owner, confirmed our booking by e-mail. He gave us valuable information about Luang Prabang even before our arrival in Luang Prabang. The property is located near the National Mueum and the Mekong River. The rooms are new and clean, they have A/C and fan rooms. We stayed at Rooms ! & 2 which are both comfortable and well designed. Although they didn't serve buffet breakfast the serving came in big portions so it is adequate and filling. I like the cereals and the youghurt. Eggs are cooked according to your preference (sunny side up, scrambled, or omelette). Peter and wife, Manichan, treated guests like family members - you can feel their sincerity and the warmth of their friendship. The couples are willing to go out of their way to assist and please their guests. They arranged a half day elephant tour for us, and also our transportation to Vang Vieng. Peter even went to the market to buy me some cereals since I didn't have time to do it myself. With the price we paid for the rooms and the exellent customer service we got we really enjoyed our time in Luang Prabang and Guesthouse Manichan is definitely a big factor for this.

Room Tip: The rooms at the ground floor are near the dining area and garden, Wi-Fi is strong compared to rooms...
