“Great atmosphere and outstanding breakfast”
Reviewed April 27, 2013 via mobile

This is a wonderful guesthouse that makes you feel at home. It's clean, location is good, room rates are fair, wi-fi works fine, staff is friendly and water, coffee and tea are complimentary and available the whole time. There's also a fridge where you can buy beer, soft drinks and even wine.

But what really stands out is their breakfast which is way above what other guesthouses offer! The atmosphere here is also really good, you'll meet travelers from all over the world and have a chance to meet new people at the table during breakfast. The place is also well frequented and there's no noise at night.

After staying in an other guesthouse for one night, we moved to the Manichan and immediately felt like beeing home. Checked in a privet double room with fan and shared bathroom and were totally satisfied. The rooms and amenities are extraordinary clean and the stuff is really friendly! We would recommend this guesthouse 100%!

We came back in Luang Prabang after leaving it 1 week. We strolled along the Mekong-side of town and walked into Mahichans garden. Felt good immediately!
Rooms are good and clean, modern bathroom with hot shower, cold mineral-water always free available, perfect breakfast (the best we had in Asia!).
Location is perfect: close to the Mekong with all the little restaurants, close to the market and the mainstreet, but still a quiet street.

We stayed four nights initially, in a private room with bathroom and aircon and were very happy with the experience as we found it to be very relaxed and nice atmosphere. The breakfast was great, however Peter the owner didnt quite like when u didnt opt for the breakfast. We went up north for a week and came back for a flight so went back to manichan a second time as Happy returning customers. At the time we arrived Peter was nowhere to be seen (which is very common) and no one else speaks English. We knew what we paid last time but opted this time for shared bathroom to cut costs a bit. On our second day we Went out for breakfast and came back to find money missing, now whether we misplaced it i don't know but as we returned the maids were leaving our room. We confronted Peter about this in a non accusing manner, and he practically told us we were the idiots and no he would not ask his staff if they Happened to find some loose money which I requested. Anyway, as we had found him (being that he was sleeping on the couch all day or nowhere to be seen) we just double checked the price of our room. This was when we were unpleasantly shocked when he quoted us way more than the price we paid for a private bathroom the previous time. When we questioned the rip off, he said he must have made a mistake last time with the cost, in which I told him he should be running his business better if he hadn't made this mistake the first time (which he did bill us 4 nights for) and had he been around when we checked in the second time there wouldn't have been a miscommunication. I hate to make petty complaints but he then turned sour and patronising. He stated "what is $5 to you tourists" , "you stay here and don't even buy my drinks" which we thought was very rude. He said the extra cost was for aircon (again a miscommunication - avoided if he had been around) however he came in, in the middle of the day and told us very rudely to turn the airconditioner off! So what were we paying an extra $5 for??
Basically, nice place, terrible service and poorly run business. First experience was great but I would have expected a more professional response when approaching pewter with our issues.
Peter was even extremely RUDE when he smartly asked us "well undid the gibbon experience, that's costs a lot and u can't even buy my drinks". We are travellers who only kick up a stink based on principal, not a mere $5 saving. This definitely left a sour taste in our mouths. Again, nice place and good price and atmosphere so give it a try just keep an eye out for the owner, he is very unfriendly, strange and definitely not a professional nor does has any business ethics or hospitality skills.
We were very unimpressed at his childish behaviour when dealing with confrontation, and he couldn't seem to get his facts right and kept responding with "it must have been a mistake". Well we ended up leaving, next time Peter dont make so many mistakes. Keep your valuables close by - you just never know.

Dear Tripadvisor, these guests have been telling lies constantly. Firstly, they have tried to accuse the maids of stealing money in order to get the room even cheaper than 15$, while the high season room rate is 35$ a night. Our housekeepers very loyal to us for more than 3 years, and no other guest has ever complained about theft.
These guests are bad and jealous people and try to hurt us personally and business wise.
They did have been properly checked in by my wife Manichan and they knew the room rate very well. They wanted to have the room for 12$, included free coffee, tea and drinking water, free Wifi and free AC running 24 hours a day. But still, even when they already received a discount, they still tried to get it cheaper.
Of course, I got upset when they came to discuss the room rate, again. This review is only written to take revenge on their frustration for not getting the room almost for free.
Dear Tripadvisor, it is very important that this horrible malicious review should be removed.
We would consider it unfair that you would except such kind of people to hurt businesses because they cannot get what they want!!

We stayed 3 nights. Rooms are a good size. Bathroom does have a few issues with constant water on floor. Hot water in shower is a bit hit and miss but ok for quick shower. Breakfast is outstanding. Beds are hard but consistent with the rest of Asia. Great location near river, eateries and riverside places to have a drink at sunset. Overall reasonable accommodation for the price and if you only stay a few nights.

I stayed at Manichan recently with two of my friends so the three of us shared a room. The extra bed that was put in was not even a bed, it was like sleeping on a concrete slab which gave me 3 nights of very unpleasant sleep. The sheets also smelt quite dirty and the hot water was a hit and miss everytime one of us wanted to shower. Our room was right next to the communal breakfast table so it was quite noisy from 8am onwards however we woke up fairly early on our days there so this wasn't such an issue. The breakfast here is superb, best omelet I had on my trip and the fresh fruit and breads was quite a treat. It was a lovely atmosphere to have everyone sitting around the one table at breakfast time and we got some great tips and met some lovely people due to this. The location is also wonderful, a short stroll to almost everything and we never had an issue finding our way back at nights.

I cannot recommend Manichan Guesthouse more highly. This was the first time we have stayed in a guesthouse but it wont be the last. The rooms were great, as was the breakfast, the location and the local flavour, but what makes Manichans stand out was the atmosphere. Travellers from around the world gathered around the table at breakfast and then again at the end of the day to exchange stories, tips and to just have fun. Peter and Manichan made us most welcome and our stay didn't feel like accommodation more like home.
