The Mekong river view hotel has indeed charming and comfortable rooms with a private veranda overlooking the Mekong. Most of the previous reviews are true, rooms are clean and comfortable, the staff is nice and the manager provides a warm welcome and useful tips about sites worth visiting or good restaurants. The breakfast is good and they provide bicycles. I would have liked tea or coffee facilities in the room and although everything is very nice overall, we thought it was too expensive even for Luang prabang, with no discount during low season.

The hotel is situated on a quiet road, next to the Mekong. As its advertisements tell us, every room overlooks the river, although the upper rooms have the best view, and it is lovely to sit on the balcony watching as the evening light turns the water from brown to silver. The hotel is small, charming and impeccably run. While not particularly cheap, many extras (good breakfasts, laundry soft drinks, bicycles) are thrown in and service is cheerful and excellent. No downsides that I can think of - highly recommended.

Chose Mekong Riverview Hotel based on Tripadvisor reviews. Was pleasantly surprised. Daniel, the host and his staff were gracious, and quite helpful. His recommendations were spot on! After spending 3 days there and touring the city on bike and motorbike, this is the best hotel, in the best location...caution - there is a Mekong River Hotel -- NOT THE SAME.
thank you Daniel and staff for a memorable stay

I did a ton of research on places before selecting The Mekong Riverview hotel for my stay in Luang Prabang.

The Mekong Riverview Hotel was excellent, and I would recommend it to anyone. The owner has owned hotels in Sweden for many years, and just a year and a half ago opened this one - with the idea that he would create a more personal experience.

The staff is incredibly friendly, knowledgable, and service-oriented. Upon check-in I mentioned that I needed a SIM card and an ATM machine, and one of his staff drove me to town and waited for me at each stop. The hotel also can book and give great advice about the various tours available in Luang Prabang (elephant tour, water tour, cave tour).

The hotel has wifi (although it was a bit unreliable, which may be the case with all Luang Prabang's hotels), and it also has bikes for the use of its guests. I wish I had taken more advantage of the bikes.

The breakfast is excellent - and includes croissants, coffee, fruit, and special order items such as crepes, fruit shakes, eggs, and bacon - all included in the price.

This hotel is also in an excellent location - right on the water where you can sit on your porch and watch the Mekong, and 3 to 5 minutes walking distance to town.

The only complaint is that the room is somewhat dark and the furnishings felt cold, and the toilet is located oddly away from the sink and shower area inside a small closet.

I would definitely stay here again - the staff is excellent, the location is great, the availability of things like bikes and a golf cart ride into town are terrific as well, and everything is walkable from here.

The management has found the perfect formula - they bring the personal touch and warmth of a guesthouse to the efficiency and professionalism of a hotel. We felt like we were staying in someone's house as honoured guests, with that someone staying unobtrusively in the background but knowing exactly when to make their presence felt.

This is a small hotel right on the banks of the Mekong (or as close as one can get, given development restrictions in the town). There are just 7-8 rooms on two floors - while we had a lovely room on the top floor, the only difference I could make out in the rooms on the ground floor was that the floors were of stone (vs wood). The room was well but not excessively furnished - and one does not feel one is sitting in an oriental museum. The "Swedish" bed was comfortable and wonderful - one can control the inclines just like on a business class seat. The toilet (WC) and bath (shower, basin) are separate, which really helps cut down bathroom time in the morning when two people are sharing a room - however the toilet is really small - barely the size of a broom closet. The only thing that could improve the room is a safe, and a coffee / tea maker. (They do have complimentary tea and coffee available in the lounge downstairs though). Each room has a balcony / terrace, which while not strictly private, is almost so, thanks to clever partitioning and access via different sets of stairs. One gets a lovely view of the Mekong and the hills from every room thanks to the balcony. You could just sit here for hours watching the quite street life below.

The location is fantastic - unless you like to be in the middle of the action and touristy shops and restaurants. It is on the northern edge of town, on the road parallel to the river, with hardly any other "hotels" nearby. At the same time, it is just a 5 minute walk to Wat Xieng Thong, the most "popular" temple in Luang Prabang, a 10 min walk to some very good restaurants (French and Lao), and 15-20 mins to the touristy stuff such as the night market. In any case, they give you a free one way ride if you wish.

The hotel offers free airport transfers (2-way) and breakfast, which is ordered by phone to a family nearby and supplied from their kitchen. They do not charge for bottled water and soft drinks in the room fridge, which is a very nice touch, and as mentioned before, for tea and coffee.

We checked out some other places while in Luang Prabang, such as the much recommended 3 Nagas, and are glad we chose this over the others. Quality of rooms and service is exceptional, there is no exploitation of guests for basics such as water etc, and the hotel is obviously more interested in helping the local community vs making more money by acting as middleman for tours etc (they arranged a boat for us at pretty much the same price and less hassle as agents in town were asking).

Overall, a fantastic experience. With such management this would be a great place anywhere in the world, but Luang Prabang makes it special.

Thank You very much for this review! The description of the atmosphere and service of the hotel captures exactly the feeling that we are working hard to give our guests. We are so happy that the details are noted and we feel that we are on the right way. All written and spoken “reviews” are presented and explained to all staff in the daily morning meeting. We share ideas, find solutions and improvements as a team. I need to comment on one detail in this review (…”and breakfast, which is ordered by phone to a family nearby and supplied from their kitchen.”). It can look like that but the truth is that we have relocated our kitchen and office to a building 40 meters from the hotel. Deliveries, visitors and cooking are moved away to minimize disturbance to our guests. Our kitchen has a modern western standard with good hygiene. I can understand that it can look like breakfast is coming from the neighbour house when the kitchen staff is bringing the fresh made orders from “around the corner”. Thank You again!

Beautiful and cozy hotel, located on a very quiet and nice area of Luang Prabang. It's a lovely place, it's the right place just to relax. The view you have of the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers just from your room is unforgettable. We stayed for five days. This is the time you need to visit LP and really enjoy the hotel (our plan was to stay for two days, then move to another hotel but once we experienced the first day, we decided to stay three days more).
The breakfast is another wonderful experience: fresh fruit every morning and you can even order fresh vanilla or chocolate crepes with banana, something really delicious.
All the staff is very kind and helpful, they make you feel as if you were in your own home.
I think they only have to improve the Internet access, it's very, very slow.
I definitely recommend this hotel, but as I said before, try to stay at least three to four days in order to have time for visiting the nice LP and for enjoying the hotel.

Mekong Riverview hotel is situated on the peaceful peninsula of Luang Prabang, next to one of the most beautiful temples. All rooms have river views, and balconies are cleverly devided with a fence that can be opened, to give each room a feeling of private balcony. Rooms are equipped with everything necessary and less necessary: flatscreen tv, minibar with complimentary soft drinks, aircon and fan, rainshower, roomy bathrooms with separate toilet, good lighting including reading lights on both sides of the beds, and on top of everything, very soft motorized beds, which are incredibly comfortable for reading and watching television. The rooms are absolutely beautiful. Some guests might find that the hotel is far away from the main drag, but we quite enjoyed the 5 min walk, due to the fact that the area is so beautiful, and utterly peaceful and safe.
Breakfast is really good and has more variety than most; croissants, whole wheat toast, bread rolls, cheese, salami, yoghurt and fruit salad. Eggs are cooked to order. Banana pancake would a nice addition! Everything is very hygienically presented. Coffee and tea is available in the lounge all day long.
In many parts of Luang Prabang it is nearly impossible to sleep past 6am, here there are no distractions.
The hotel has a golf cart, with which they are happy to drive you where ever you wish to go within city limits. The two wifis work most of the time, although slowly.
The staff is really pleasant, and speaks good English. The Swedish owner is a reliable source of information and a very pleasant host.
Truly minor complaints: The queen sized double beds are a bit on the small side. Unless you are used to smallish beds, you’d be better off getting a twin room with beds pushed together. There no safe in the room, but one large one at the reception. Some toilets might be a little cramped. The incline in some shower floors might be inadequate for effective drainage. In most hotels hot water is sometimes not available, here for some reason cold water was not always available.
Best things do not tend to come cheap. The rate during summer season is 120 USD. Worth every cent. If you come to Luang Prabang to rest and relax, and enjoy well designed, well built, beautiful facilitiesthis is the spot for you. During summer season, when it rains sometimes, it is even more important to have a pleasant room where you enjoy staying during the rain. The expression “raily season” seams a little misguiding, as to us, the rain seemed more like a blessing, and never lasted more than a couple hours. After the rain, the air is clean and cool, and it’s a perfect time to climb up Mount Phosy, or some other activity otherwise slightly too demanding in hot weather.

First of all I have to thank You for the very detailed review and the kind words. We opened 15 months ago and are still in the process of getting better. Our in-room safes are ordered and we expect them to be installed soon. The reason it took us time to get them is because we want them to be fitted into our room furniture and be big enough to fit a laptop computer and a camera at the same time (also easy to use!). We had to special order. We hear many compliments for our Swedish made remote controlled beds but I agree that a queen double (150cm) can be too small at times. Beds of this quality are a big investment but in a not so distant future the beds are changed in the double rooms in question. I’m happy You liked our breakfast but we are in a constant process of improvement. From yesterday our breakfast has the new options: fresh made vanilla/chocolate/banana pancakes, fruit shakes and a special “morning dessert” (banana, pineapple, honey…). Thank You for stay with us and hope to see You again!
