“Best place to stay in Luang Prabang”
Reviewed October 13, 2009

The owner and staff of this hotel make it the best place to stay in Luang Prabang. The location, a block to the Mekong in one diection and a block to the night market in the other direction is the perfect spot in the center of town but peaceful. The Royal Palace, now The National Musem is right accross the street. The famous monks walk right past the hotel every morning. The hotel is excelent value, the rooms are spotless, and breakfast a great start to the day in beautiful Luang Prabang. Mike Lipson

Room with CNN TV for $25! Villa Laodeum a bed & breakfast in Luang Prabang, Laos, has them. One block from the Mekong River, across the street from the former Palace of the King of Lao.

We stayed in Room No. 5. It had what frequently is missing or compromised in many Southeast Asian rooms. Room No. 5 has strong water pressure all the time. Shower as hot or warm as you wish without readjusting the temp. Plenty of liquid soap, extra factory wrapped toilet paper, bathroom mirror that can not steam up or “fog” up. Good A/C. TV as I said, refrigerator, free water daily. Fresh sheets & towels daily. A free 18 choice breakfast, done to perfection, plus stuff you didn’t order thrown in. Delicious!

7/11 type products, restaurants and tour operators around the corner.

Room No. 5 is totally quiet at night.

Room Number Five has something I have never seen in any hotel room. I randomly opened the desk drawer, vaguely curious. I pulled out an album. Personal entries (comments and reviews) were authored, dated and signed by guests from all over the world who stayed in Room No. 5 since the hotel opened. WOW! My wife and I sat down and read every one of them that were in English and Japanese. Year after year, people raved about everything. We wrote just as happily as everybody else.

Our last night was 20 August 2009. The owner, Sayvanh, his wife and staff run Villa Laodeum. e-Mail in Luang Prabang usually works, but it’s not always 100%. Sometime Internet links can be down. I booked my room by writing Sayvanh at [--].com. He also personally drove us to the airport. This is as close to being at home while away from home as I have experienced. I wasn’t looking for that. But it’s sure nice when it happens.

Had a great stay at Lao Deum - good location near the main road but just a bit off it so you don't get the noise. We were there over Christmas/New Year and the main road is very noisy particularly around the night market. This is only about 2 minutes walk from the main road and very close to the Palace which is a lovely place to visit.

The service we had was great and they have a lovely garden with free tea and coffee that you can sit in after a long morning walking around.

The rooms are a bit on the small side but as I had a room to myself this wasn't a problem. They were lovely and clean and though the bathroom would be a bit basic for some. I was just glad to have a good shower after staying in two hotels that either didn't have one or they didn't work properly

I didn't have breakfast here as there are so many places in walking distance that I wanted to try but it looked like it would be nice and the garden setting is lovely.

Villa Laodeum is a new family run hotel located in the center of the UNESCO world heritage part of Luang Prabang. An easy walk to everything to do and see in Luang Prabang. The rooms small but attractively furnished, very comfortable, and super clean. The owners and staff very friendly and helpful. Nice balcony for breakfast (included in price) or for relaxing during the day. Coffee, tea, and fresh fruit available all day. While a new building, it is built in the architectural style that all buildings must conform to. Rooms have up to date bathrooms, AC, and TV. Price is $25. per night, single or double, low season, breakfast and tax included, and $35. per night high season.

We picked this hotel after looking at the nice pictures they have in their website. We send an email and they replied confirming our reservation. After one and a half hours looking for it when we arrived to Luang Prabang, the hotel denied having our reservation. I showed them a printed version of the confirmation email they sent me. They said they had sent another email canceling the reservation, which was not true. After arguing one hour with the manager, he sent us to another hotel from them which was really bad. This hotel was in the middle of nowhere, it didn't had view or access to the sunlight, since the windows looked to a cement wall and trash. The bedroom was below average (although the price was the same as in our 'reservation'), the bathroom was tiring down, and the room was extremely tiny. It was so late (we arrived in the late afternoon and then after finding the hotel, discussing about the reservation, moving our bags to the other hotel, etc.) and other nearby hotels were completely full, that we stayed there one night. Really, we do not recommend people to trust in your reservation since it appears they accept more people than the number of rooms they have, so they can send you to this other hotel.
Besides, after being in LP, I recommend you to stay in the main street, Sisavangvong Road, where all the action is going on: the restaurants, the night market (very nice), some temples, etc. Another good option is staying in the street that looks to the river (but only if it is in the opposite side where you take boat trips, the boat trips side is not nice at all, and DON'T FALL ON THE "Pak Ou Caves" trip and the whiskey village, they are totally not worth the trip or the money, you better spend your time and money doing something else).
Another advice: LP and its people require a lot of patience, relax and try to have a good time.
