L'Eléphant restaurant cooks typical Lao dishes for you; dried meats and river weed as an aperitif, soups, grills or fish wrapped in banana leaves… Home-made breads and pastries, wines, spirits, ciders and a selection of beers complete the offer of this old-fashioned restaurant, chic, classy yet simple with its wooden floors and local wooden furniture. Relaxed atmosphere; casual attire! Open daily for lunch and dinner! Home made pastries and drinks all the day long ! PROS
- the pumpkin soup was outstanding
- the Lao espresso was presented well
- the cocktails were well balanced and delicious
- the coq au vin was decent but ...

CONS
- ...the accompanying pasta was very mushy (al dente probably happened 5 minutes before the pasta got pulled out of the water)
- the salad was seriously overdressed
- I really hate eating at places where there isn't a single woman visible on the staff. The place was TEAMING with waiters, greeters, bartenders, and trainees. You couldn't hire ONE girl??
- I understand that this place is trying to present itself as very upscale, hence the prices. But if you're going to do this, make sure you're near flawless. I've had better everything at
affordable prices (relative to the location) except for the soup.

This turned out to be our favourite international restaurant in Southeast Asia. The food and service was amazing. We came back for another meal next night too.

I really enjoyed the goat cheese appetizer and the quail. The chocolate fondant dessert was really good too.

Not cheap, but worth the splurge. Especially if you enjoy French food.

We had excellent French inspired meals there on several nights. Everything was fresh and well prepared. It is expensive by Lao standards but after a month of only Asian cuisine we needed the change and the results were excellent. They also have another restaurant, The Coconut Garden, which is on the main street, which serves inexpensive and high quality Lao food. We preferred it to the better known Tamarind, which was just so-so.

L'Elephant is an upscale French restaurant, also serving Lao dishes. We went for the French Menu after seven weeks of Asian food, a nice treat. The Lao menu looked pretty ordinary, nothing fancy about it except the price. The French menu sounded ok, there is a set menu as well as ala carte. We went for the ala carte.

The french onion soup was very good, the escargot not so great. Duck was just ok, the Rib Eye steak was paper thin, but was tasty. Glad I had appetizers, though. Wine was served in small, cheapy glasses and white wine was served too warm, which was disappointing for a restaurant that was supposed to be one of the best in town.

Setting was nice, and the interior was elegant, though there are nicer settings in Luang Prabang, and service was good if not outstanding. Overall, we had a very nice dinner, but not something to write home about. Our bill came to $120 USD, quite a change from the usual $10.00 we ended up with at most Lao restaurants.
