We had excellent French inspired meals there on several nights. Everything was fresh and well prepared. It is expensive by Lao standards but after a month of only Asian cuisine we needed the change and the results were excellent. They also have another restaurant, The Coconut Garden, which is on the main street, which serves inexpensive and high quality Lao food. We preferred it to the better known Tamarind, which was just so-so.

“Decent French Food, but Expensive for Laos”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 29, 2009

L'Elephant is an upscale French restaurant, also serving Lao dishes. We went for the French Menu after seven weeks of Asian food, a nice treat. The Lao menu looked pretty ordinary, nothing fancy about it except the price. The French menu sounded ok, there is a set menu as well as ala carte. We went for the ala carte.

The french onion soup was very good, the escargot not so great. Duck was just ok, the Rib Eye steak was paper thin, but was tasty. Glad I had appetizers, though. Wine was served in small, cheapy glasses and white wine was served too warm, which was disappointing for a restaurant that was supposed to be one of the best in town.

Setting was nice, and the interior was elegant, though there are nicer settings in Luang Prabang, and service was good if not outstanding. Overall, we had a very nice dinner, but not something to write home about. Our bill came to $120 USD, quite a change from the usual $10.00 we ended up with at most Lao restaurants.

“classic, solid french food in a lovely setting”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 21, 2009

We ate here on our final night in Luang Prabang. The previous reviews are very mixed but we thought we'd take our chances. We both opted for a set menu. My wife had a vegetarian menu comprising of a fantastic mozzarella, tomatoe salad, a very tasy aubergine bake and a creme caramel. I had a salad, a beautifully cooked duck breast with nice dauphinoise potatoes and a fantastic tarte tartin. The food was outstanding, the house red wine was perfect and the service was good. Although expensive for Laos I thought it was still incredible value for money and if you fancy a nice treat I thoroughly recommend it.

“Don't bother”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 19, 2009

The food we ordered came unbelievably quickly. I can only assume the microwave is well used here.

We went because it was minutes from our hotel and after 2 weeks eating asian food a change was welcome. The service is excellent as there were more staff than you could count.

The food was average.

The owner/manager prowled around and eventually settled at the bar chewing his nails in front of us. He then started giving off to a guy who seemed to be the senior floor manager. So much for not raising your voice and losing face in Asia. The guy being shouted at kept smiling.

A mistake going in on my part.
