“Small, simple guesthouse in good location”
Reviewed May 31, 2011

This is a small & simple place, homely feel. The room is good, certainly by Laos standards. Nice size, with hanging space. Big bathroom, very clean. Some people have complained about the shower, they must have fixed it. It was an electric shower, good pressure and more than enough hot water. Aircon is good. Free wifi, albeit a bit slow. Staff was uninterested, but this did not bother us. Breakfast decent, nothing special. As we were up early (beat the heat!), we spent a few kip eating breakfast out in one of the many lovely cafés. Location is good, near the main street, yet calm. Wouldn't bother with a street view room, garden view is infinitely nicer. You can see the monks all the same by simply walking down. Only irk: a very noisy cockrel that woke us up at 4:30 am each day! Food in Luang Prabang is just GREAT! We went to the night market, delicious. Equally good, Tamarind. Also, do not miss Tuai restaurant, right by the hotel (left out of hotel, turn left direction main street, it's on your right), it was just fab.

Room Tip: Garden view.

This hotel was booked for us by the tour company. It was a really good location, 1 block away from the main street in Luang Prabang. The room was clean, the air conditioner worked well, and the free wireless and plentiful TV channels were a plus. The only complaint would be that the hot water heater did not make the shower that hot.

Also note, there is no safe in the room. If you have valuables to leave behind you can do what we did and use padlocks on our suitcases.

The free breakfast was good. Not much on offer, but beat our expectations.

All the staff were super friendly in this hotel.

Room Tip: A second floor room has a nice balcony!

This is a very nicely located place in the center of LP, quiet but not far from the main drag. The rooms are a tad small for 2 people but very clean and the shiny wood floors were impressive. The toilet was clean too but I had some issues with the small shower head. I couldn’t really get a vigorous shower no matter how much I fiddled with it. Perhaps it was due to the weak water pressure.

Since I couldn’t prepay, I was initially worried about the room reservations. I’ve read somewhere here in TA that some reservations weren’t honored. I need not have worried. We got to the guesthouse and check in was real smooth. We were given exactly the room I requested, 2nd floor, streetside (w/c afforded a good view of the monk’s procession every morning) and non-smoking.

The breakfast, served in a nice garden setting, that came with the room rate was quite adequate to start one off. Baguette, eggs cooked to order, butter (not margarine like in a previous hotel in Bagan), milk and fruits. Too bad the coffee was weak. What an injustice to Lao coffee!

Also Alex (I think he’s the owner’s son) was promptly responsive to my emails.

Overall, even with the minor showerhead issue, for the price point I’d highly recommend this guesthouse.

When we arrived in Luang Prabang, we had no reservation. We had heard good reviews about a Villa Chitdara in Luang Prabang so we asked our tuktuk driver for it. We ended up at this place, only to learn later that the Villa Chitdara we were looking for was actually Villa Chitdara 2. Never mind it, we visited it out of curiosity and this one right here is way better. They had a few free rooms so we happily checked in. We loved it so much we decided to extend our stay from 4 to 7 nights. This hotel is charming, lovely and very bright and clean. The breakfast is very good, the staff is amazing (Alex, the owner, speaks perfect English AND French, which was very useful for us). The hotel is in the heart of the city so you won't have trouble getting around by foot. Right in front, there is a laudry place and at the corner, a bicycle renting place. That is without mentionning all the massage salons and great restaurants all around. We slept like babies at Villa Chitdara and enjoyed every minute of our stay. You'll want to stay longer.

My wife and I stay here for 4 nights. My review reflects the price range of this hotel for Laos.

Overall, Laos and Cambodia prices are more expensive than Viet Nam on all travel logistics.

This inn is charming and consistent with the ambiance of Luang Prabang.

Room has balcony, is tad too small, but has all modern amenities. Shower has on-demand heater, which is eco-friendly.

Breakfasts are held at the large cabana with simple but appreciative fares.

Garden is lovely and quiet.

One major criticism is the weak wi-fi connection inside the room. For the price they charge, management should install more wireless router. I had to stay down the lobby and cabana to use their internet.

Overall, it is inferior to the Le Bel Air hotel, where we stayed for 4 nights and is located across the river, at nearly the same price.

Bikes are not available.

We spent two nights at Villa Chitdara and found it a lovely little guesthouse which we would love to return to. We had requested an upstairs street view room so we could await and view the monk's alms ceremony from the privacy of our own balcony and this is what we were given. Although fairly small, the room had heaps of charm and was very clean. The bathroom was also clean with the only drawback being the shower which was the type that you had to run around in to get wet but at least it was hot. The staff were friendly and helpful and the usual style of included breakfast very nice and served in attractive surroundings in a gazebo in the back garden.
I would imagine that normally the guesthouse would be very quiet but on our second night, the family next door started a funeral/memorial type ceremony at 4am which started with bells and chanting and escalated into a full on party with amplified band and singer by the middle of the following day. Despite the interrupted sleep, this is one of the great things about travelling to places like Luang Prabang and staying in guesthouses scattered among normal family homes - you get unexpected cultural experiences which you miss if you only stay in 5 star hotels in tourist enclaves.
The villa is located in close walking distance to the main tourist street, the night market, the major Wats and the river. Great restaurants and all the traveller support facilities you could want are close at hand and Luang Prabang is the sort of town that you can just enjoy wandering around soaking up at the vibe.
