“Just Stay here!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 6, 2011

We had decided to split our week in luang prabang into three days out of town and four in town. We choose Khoun and Khone after reading the online reviews and still felt some unease about the desicion on the plane ride, esp about whether the kids (ages 18, 14 and 7) would be bored.. However, from the first ride in the jeep from the airport, we never gave it a second thought. The kids (esp our 7yo) were treated like family. The food was the best we ate on our nearly month long holiday, my husband still has cravings for the red curry.

Travelling in the open top jeep was enormous fun (except for when the welding gave way on the front passsenger seat and left the 18yo with a very sore shin... The waterfalls are a highlight but we very much enjoyed being taken around the Hmong village and whisky village as well.

The kids were never bored, even though there was no tv and we didn't bother trying to access the internet. I think we could have stayed happily for one more night (esp as the hotel we moved to was completely awful) but it was good to spend some time in town as well.

We had two bungalows between the 5 of us. The kids bungalow was closest to the dining bungalow and the water pressure in the shower was far better than ours which was up the hill a bit. the views were wonderful however and more than made up for the dodgy showers. We spent a lot of time kicking back on balconies, reading and playing cards.

Khone and Khoun also have very friendly and well looked after pet cats and dogs. Very much a family home.

I wouldn't recommend it if you like travelling in airconditioned comfort, like access to the internet constantly and need large crowds of tourists around you. But if you have kidsa(or not), like really good food and great hosts, then stay here. Could not recommend it highly enough.

Everyone agrees that the owners are exceptionally wonderful people. In spite of being city folks, they have struggled to turn a patch of jungle into a B&B.

While I have a lot of respect and affection for this couple, I should warn visitors they will be staying at a decidedly inconvenient location, operating in a low power grid with dim lighting, sometimes low water pressure with luke warm showers on slightly chilly mornings. Also, Internet connecting is an adventure via a slow USB dongle that is used with their or your own laptop that offers email via dedicated email readers but you can forget general web access for practical purposes.

The folks have a great attitude in trying to jeep you in and out of town, but you need to determine ahead of time when you wish to be picked up - rather than casually stepping out on to the town and returning to one's lodging at a whim.

The food is very good and fairly priced at in-town rates.

Since another couple had to overstay due to medical reasons, we were forced to spend the first night in town at another B&B, the Hoxieng Guesthouse. We liked it so much we spent 2 nights before transferring to the countryside for 4 nights. In retrospect we probably should have stayed 3 nights each. One place had primitive, remote accommodations with great people and the other had superb accommodations in an excellent location at a minor upcharge but with flaky hotel management.

In other words, both places offering good if flawed values.

My friend and I had had neighboring bungalows set up on a hill with magnificent views and the background sound of whirring insects. You can watch the sunset from your wood porch, or go down to the sala and chat with Khoun and Khone the sweetest and funniest couple in Lao. If you're lucky they'll make a Lao barbeque and entertain you with the amazing stories of their lives. Hidden gem, highlight of Luang Prabang.

We decided to stay here after reading the reviews on TA and I must stay we picked a winner. From the moment we were picked up at the airport in an old jeep we knew we were in for something different.
The bungalows are 10-15 minutes out of town, the second half of the trip on a very pot-holed road, so if you want to walk out of your hotel and be in the heart of things this isn't the place for you. If however you are after a truly unique experience with wonderful hosts then Khoun and Khone's Bungalows can't be beaten.
This isn't just somewhere to sleep. Staying here you are basically living with a local family and learn so much more about the country than you possibly could staying at a run of the mill hotel. We ate with the family, Khone is a magnificent cook, went on trips with Khoun, who's enthusiasm for showing his local area is effervescent, and just sat and talked during the quiet times. And if we wanted to go into town we only had to ask and the jeep was running, although to be honest the novelty of being bounced around wore off after 2 or 3 days.
Staying out here is not going to be for everyone but after all you've come to Laos which not many people do so why not have a truly local experience. Read the reviews, not many have regretted it.

This is the place to relax, close enough to Luang Prabang for excursions, far enough away to avoid the backpacker scene when that becomes too much. K&K are wonderful hosts, nothing is too much trouble, and their food is as good as it gets. This is an idyllic location for chilling out, highly recommended.

the minute we step into the bungalow,we feel so right home and their hospitality i won't even call it a service was so so awesome!!we stayed for 4 days and have 3 wonderful and best Laos diners with the family, their three children and my sons played together and FLY,Khoun's son went to the Kungxi waterfall with us,we have so much fun with him and fall in love with this lovely boy.
Khoun took us to his pineapple farm and cut a pineapple for us,to taste a pineapple right in the middle of his farm, that was the best pineapple we ever had.
we have so much to share but to sum this place is that if you are looking to experience Laos life, culture and best Laos home cook meal and their AWESOME service, this is the place for you.
Thank you Khoun,Khone,Mina,Fly,Mimi,Soupone and Jit, the boys and I had a lovely time, you made us all feel welcome and we will all return to stay. This was the Laos I wanted my sons to see and experience.

We were initially a little hesitant to stay outside of town, but those fears quickly subsided when we pulled up to Khone and Khoun in their open topped jeep. The landscape was beautiful, the bungalows were masterfully built (by Khone himself), the family was super friendly (including their cute 9 year old daughter Mimi who accompanied us on all our side trips), and the food was delicious.

If you are looking for a cheap backpacking hostel with tons of westerners, this is not the place for you. But if you are looking for an authentic homestay with an amazing Laotian family - this should be your first (and only) choice.

A few quick notes on our stay:
- Even though you are outside of town, they are more than happy to take you into town at any time of the night and day. Don't let the 5-10 minute trip scare you away.
- Khoun is a brilliant cook - eat every meal at the bungalows. The spring rolls and curries are beautiful.
- If you are deathly scared of bugs, you shouldn't have come to SE Asia in the first place. But just know that this place has a few more bugs since you are out in the country-side.
- You will get an amazing nights sleep - the beds are much more comfortable than those we slept on in China. Plus, when it rains at night the pitter patter on the thatched roof puts you right to sleep.
- Khone is happy to take you to many of the local sites (for a small fee obviously). The caves are OK, but the waterfall is absolutely worth the trip (bring your swimsuit!).
- The families English is actually quite good and they love to tell stories (especially Khone).
- We are still not sure which one is Khone and which one is Khoun, but either way, they are both fantastic people...let us know if you figure it out :)

Luang Prabang is a fantastic little town with tons of character - why not make it even better with your new family - Khoun and Khone!
