“Wonderful hotel, helpful staff, great location”
Reviewed January 29, 2012

We stayed in Luang Prabang for six days, moving to the Xieng Mouane guesthouse on our third day because we were so unhappy at our previous hotel on the outskirts of town. Moving to this hotel completely transformed my experience of Luang Prabang, and made me wish we'd stayed here from the very beginning. We had two rooms, as we were traveling with a 3-year-old, an 11-month-old, and my 72-year-old father. The rooms were really comfortable, well-lit and clean, the showers hot, and best of all, they always had an electric kettle of hot water ready for you to make your own coffee or tea on demand. The staff were really helpful: they played with our children, called the airline to check our flight departure time, called us a tuk-tuk when we needed it, and even let us use a room downstairs to clean up before our evening flight after we'd checked out of our regular rooms. The wi-fi worked well and there was a fridge in each room. The location was great, as i could literally walk a block to the night market or to grab sandwiches for the family. The biggest thing for me about staying here was peace of mind: i didn't have to worry about whether my elderly father was comfortable or if he needed a hot drink. I didn't want to leave!

Room Tip: We liked our rooms on the second floor of the main building. They were quiet and overlooked the Wat...

I arrived in Luang Probang after 6 days on a bicycle in the north. I found the acoomodations to be most welcoming. While there were no special services, my room on the second floor was very clean, the bed extremely comfortable and the shower awter very warm. My room looked out on street level yet was not noisy. The main street is a short walk down a narrow street. The night market is very close.

Xieng Moung Guest House is situated in the heart of old Luang Prabang, opposite the temple of the same name and on a street that runs parallel to the main street for shopping and restaurants on one side, and the street next to the Mekong on the other side.

Our room was in an old colonial building that had lots of character, including shuttered windows and high ceilings. As an old building it did have a few creaky floorboards and the air-conditioning on its own without assistance from the fan wasn’t sufficient to cool the room (although we did stay there at the hottest time of the year). But there were other compensations that made this a good place to stay. For a start the room was spotlessly clean and new towels were provided every day. Guests also received two free bottles of water and could obtain more from the water dispenser in the reception area or the hot water flask (with tea making facilities) on our landing. In fact, the guest house was very well managed and the daily servicing of rooms was undertaken without prompting, unobtrusively and to a high standard.

The street on which the guest house is located is quiet despite its proximity to the busiest parts of the old town. There was some early morning noise from the temple opposite on “sin days” but for us this was one of the unique attractions of the guest house and of Luang Prabang.

just back home after 6days at xieng mouane. highly recommended for location, value for money & ambience. rooms are very clean with everything in good working order, great little balcony if u stay in rooms out the back. loved to hear the owner's son singing as he went about his work & the beautiful chanting & drumming from the temples opposite. The temple drums are in NO way annoying-quite the opposite. I'm very noise sensitive but this was a most serene & beautiful sound- enchanting. best location- 2 mins walk thru the temple to main street. Unless of course, you stop to talk to the monks.
nicer location than along Mekong & morning monk procession on the doorstep.
only 1 little grumble- bed far too hard for our Western bones but we did get used to it.
no breakfast but great choice of baguettes down the road.

Xieng Mouane is hidden down a little street in Luang Prabang. We were the only people there when we turned up, and thus got the "suite" room at a cheap price. This was a very big 2-room space, and pretty comfortable for what we were paying. The room was decent, although a little faded in terms of it's furniture etc - but very charming. The room was cleaned daily, and everything was pretty spick and span. The aircon was a wee bit hit and miss. Sometimes the air vents would fall closed and the air con would cool down nothing but itself!

The staff were all really friendly - always a smile whenever we saw them. While we were there, the bathroom door handle broke, fortunately one of us was not inside at the time as the door wouldn't open! The staff quickly organised a locksmith and all was sorted within an hour or so.

The location is good - a short stroll from the main street, and if you want to watch the monks collecting alms they go right past the front door (convenient for that 5:30am wakeup that you'll need to see it!). There is a wat right across the road as well, adding to the charm - just watch out for the monks banging that drum first thing in the morning!

Unfortunately there is no internet access or breakfast included - a shame as the pretty little garden courtyard would be a nice place to eat.

My wife and I stayed at Xiang Mouane GH for 10 days. The room was spacious and clean. There is no heat in the rooms but the heavy blankets kept us warm. We were in Luang Prabang in mid January and the evening and mornings were chilly. The Guest House had a charm of its own with a nice garden and two talking birds. The staff were helpful and the over all ambiance was special. For those looking for good value in a quiet location with friendly helpful staff this is a great place to stay.

  • Liked — The ocurtyard/garden
  • Disliked — No heat ifr those chiily evening and no TV.

We stayed 3 nights at Xieng Mouane Guesthouse, not in the main villa but in the building at the back. The guesthouse is really on the center of Luang Prabang, in a very quiet street.

The staff is friendly.

Our room was small, with view on the garden, and a nice decoration. it was very clean and pleasant, no air conditioning but a fan was enough for November.

The rooms in the main building are supposed to have more character with colonial style and wooden floors.

For 30 USD per night, the value was very good and I definitely recommend this place. For now, there is no breakfast, which is a pity, as the garden is nice.

  • Liked — Everything
  • Disliked — I would have prefer breakfast in the garden
