“Breakfast on our river-view balcony was a great way to start each day!”
Reviewed September 11, 2010

Looked at about 8 different mid-range guesthouses in Luang Prabang before settling on this one. The rooms very incredibly comfortable and so well-finished. High ceilings, hardwood floors, spacious river-view hardwood balconies, on which we were served a generous breakfast every morning. Cash-only (no credit cards). $50 for a upper floor double may seem a little pricey for Luang Prabang, but it was great value compared to similarly priced hotels we looked at. Thoroughly recommended!

Stayed for 4 nights in January 2010. Booked on the spot, as our previous place was busy. The staff are incredibly nice. They asked us to join them for their staff lunch before we had even committed to booking. The woman who runs the house is very friendly and will tell you all about her various business ventures and ideas for Luang Prabang. One of which is to bring credit card payment to more hotels. (When the largest Kip bill is 50,000 and you need a wad of 50 of those to pay for your room, you begin to appreciate the value of such amenities!. The guy with the AK-47 at the ATM was a reassurance, I think...)
We were able to negotiate a price of $60/night for room #2, which is huge, with a large bathroom (agree with a previous post admiring the shower). Beautiful, original dark wood trim, floors and teak furniture. Large enclosed balcony, with comfortable chairs for sitting with a Beer Lao and watching monks go by on the Nam Khan riverside road. (The room also had a flat screen TV with live Premiership games on every night via Thailand, he admits sheepishly. No wifi yet, but it's everywhere else so just go to a cafe.) We were the only guests, I think, as the word is not yet out on this hotel. But the room had no noise issues, it was supremely clean, charming and great value. Don't bother with the pretentious boutique place next door (Apsara)--this is the real deal.

This is a charming, comfortable and welcoming place to stay. It looks onto the Nam Ong river and is in the quieter part of the old town near the Apsara Hotel. All the rooms have balconies and are tastefully furnished. The host and staff were helpful and delightful and most spoke some English. Staying here enhanced our experience of lovely Luang Prabang.

Ban Lakkham is only a year old - so it's clean and tidy. The rooms and balconies on the upper floor are nice.

However I don't believe this hotel offers good value for money in Luang Prabang. We paid US 90.00 dollars per night - and after walking around the town for a couple of days found several other small hotels and guest houses that were just as nice for US 35-45 dollars.

What's more there is almost no 'sound' privacy in the rooms on the upper floor. You can here 'everything' (and I mean everything) from the adjacent rooms.

The owner attempts to run a 'my house is your house' style hotel / guest house - but I think it's strictly business so don't hesitate to try and negotiate, or at the least look around first if you can.

This is a relatively new guesthouse - opened in spring of 2008. The owner is a really nice friendly woman who genuinely likes talking to her guests and helping with arrangements etc. She is a retired doctor and says that doing a Caesarian section is easier than using the internet - hence if you email about a reservation you aren't likely to receive a timely response! She does have a website (search for Lao Golden Pillar - that is the other name of the guesthouse), but its better to call and make a reservation directly or just show up. The rooms were really nice with polished wood and a little balcony with a view of the river. It was a good location - short walk to the night market and just one road over from the morning monk route. Ask for the Lao noodle soup for breakfast - it was fantastic!

Hotel rooms in Luang Prabang are expensive in comparison to the rest of Laos and indeed expensive in comparision to other developing countries. For what you get though, this is good value for Luang Prabang.

Located on the waterfront of the Nam Khan River it has spotless clean rooms furnished with lovely wooden furniture... and a balcony with a view to the river. The owner is a retired medical doctor. Breakfast is served in a garden area right next to the river.

The price on the website appears to be higher than what you actually pay - stayed in high season 2008 but the rate was $55/night including breakfast for 2.

It's more pleasant than staying on the Mekong side as the Mekong side is very busy (plus there is a line of trees so you won't have views of the Mekong from your room even if you do stay that side). The Nam Khan River side is much quieter and still an easy walk to everywhere.

For half the price of other boutique hotels, this place is totally worth it. Check it out before it gets listed in the Lonely Planet guide and the price doubles!

  • Liked — Quiet and watching the world from the balcony.
  • Disliked — No in-room safe and no TV.

My friend and I arrived in Louang Prabang with nothing booked - just to add to the adventure a bit! - and had already spent some time walking around the old town working through the list of recommended hotels from our guide book - with no luck. We had been turned away from several hotels until we walked a few yards along the street from the 'Aspara' to the Ban Lakkham.

We asked about the availability of a room for 3 nights, and while the register was being checked we were treated to an ice cold glass of Orange Juice straight off the bat! Very welcome in the heat and humidity and hassle of the day. Shoes off at reception, which seemed reasonable as, besides being polite, the hotel looked to be quite new so they wanted to keep it that way and it kind of made us feel more welcome.

Luckily a room was available - the hotel didn't seem to be busy despite everywhere else being rammed - and having agreed a very good rate - US$35 per night the very nice man at reception offered to upgrade us to the upstairs deluxe room at no extra cost after one night in the downstairs room.

The rooms were very clean, bright, with lots of dark timber and hanging silks and the A/C in the room was magnificent - powerful enough to leave condensation on the outside of the windows! The en-suites were large and fitted out to a relatively high standard (the downstairs ensuite had a spa/jet/massage shower unit - no less).

The hotel runs an airport shuttle bus/minivan for US$6 one way, and can also arrange trips in the bus or help negociate a boat trip up the Mekong or Nam Ou river. The staff at reception were also more than happy to give us a wake up call at 6am on our departure day, early breakfast was, of course, not a problem.

The staff were very friendly and always able to help.

Breakfast was included in the room rate and was served on the private balcony/terrace whenever you seemed to be stirring.

The location is on the street which faces the Nam Ou river, and from the upstairs room we had river glimpses and views out to the jungle covered mountains in the distance.......with a bit of creative work with a machette. The hotel is about 20 metres away from some riverside restaurants, and about 100 metres away from just about everything you came to see in the old town!

Also the slippers they provide in each room are way funky! you can buy them from the night markets if they really ring your bell.

I defy anyone to find a better hotel, or better location, or better service in Laos for that price!
