We purchased tickets from our hostel in Chiang Khong (Namkhong Guesthouse) where they didnt give us a reciept but said we would get a sticker the next day and that this would be suffice. Note:make sure you get a reciept!! We probably paid over the odds (1250 baht per person). The price included transfer to the boarder. Also be aware than you will still need another 20 baht each to cross the bridge to get to Laos! Here our stickers allocated us to a pick up truck to take us to the slow boat. The first days boat leaves at 11:30am so make sure you get through passport and visas in good time!! (Note: theres also a fee in Dollars for the visas it's mainly 30 dollars, but for UK its 35 and we saw it was 40 for Canadians. Oh and remember to bring a passport photo.)

They overload the boats and there were more than one person without a seat and had to sit with their bags (again make sure you get there in good time!!). The seats are mostly car seats but there were a few church pews type seats with cushions on. I recommend the car seats - they recline!! There was a toilet on board (try and avoid) and a little cafe/bar selling beer for 10,000 to 20,000 kip, fizzy drinks for 10,000 kip and some snacks varying prices from 5,000 to 15,000 kip. The views are lovely and keep you entertained for a while but I would highly recommend a book, magazine, sudoku or crossword! I also reccomend trying to sit near the front (engine is at the back and noisy!) and also to make your bag recognisable, we put colourful rain covers on ours. When they unpack the boats it's a scramble to find your bags and you dont wanna end up with someone else's etc...

After 6 and a bit hours you then stop at Pakbeng. Once you've got your bags you clamber up the rocks and there are a tonne of Lao people trying to entice you to stay at their guesthouse. We stayed at Donevilasuk and had no problems (I've reviewed this place separately). There are a handful of "bars" we went to Hive bar for a drink, some food and a game of pool. The guesthouse owners appear to act as a rep for these places.

The next day the boats leave at 0900. Whatever you do, get up early and get on the boat! Again its over packed and this leg is longer so you will 100% want a seat!! Also stock up on nibbles before you leave again.

The second leg of the journey is 8 hours, so again have some entertainment but lots of people chat to one another, sleep etc...

At the Luang Prabang end it's another scramble for the bags and a hike up the steps. They dont drop you anywhere near the town so here you have to get a tuktuk which was 20,000kip perperson to the centre. You all get bundled into the tuktuks and bags get put on top and then they drive you to the centre. We hadn't booked a room so used the centre to then wander and find accommodation.

I would totally recommend the slow boat route to get you to Luang Prabang but just go prepared with food, drinks, entertainment and patience.

The river cruise was very pleasant, relaxing and enjoyable. But the caves themselves were a disappointment. After climbing up many steps, what greets you is this dark cave that was rather short, you could see everything just standing by the stairs. Cave filed with lots if bug and small statues.
Kuangsi Falls was very nice and worth the trip. The blue/green pools and the rushing waters at different levels were pretty. Saw several people swimming and enjoying the nice cold water. Easy walk up.

Perfectly organized, entertaining and amazingly beautiful. The sunset tour on the Mekong is a must see if you visit Luang Prabang.

This was a really great tour - definitely exceeded my expectations! We booked a group tour but wound up getting a private tour. Our driver took us an hour into the mountains on a dirt road to a Hmong village. Then we hiked through the countryside, had lunch with our guide (who was really great - we learned a lot!) and spent the afternoon at the waterfall before getting a ride back to our hotel. I would highly recommend to anyone who enjoys trekking and wants to see more of the Laotian countryside without going too far from Luang Prabang, and while still getting to see Kuang Si.

The cruise comes with a complementary Cocktail.
Unfortunately with so little rum in the Mujito you can’t taste it. It put us off buying any other drinks.
The cruise into the sunset is all you would expect ...beautiful memorable and romantic.
