Spicylaos Backpackers
Reviewed June 11, 2011

SpicyLaos was probably one of the most wackiest places I have ever stayed at. It's not really a hostel in terms of a place to stay, it's more somewhere to drink, party and be hungover at- so not the best if you want a decently clean room. The staff are extremely friendly, joining in on the campfire sing-a-longs. It feels more like a gap year camp than anything else.

In terms of the room, the women's dorm had three beds and a bathroom. It wasn't regularly cleaned or cleaned at all in fact, and insects seemed to make their way through the ventilator shaft and end up dissected all over the beds. So hygiene is seriously lacking here.

But they have their own Tuk tuk that can take viisitors on tours on a daily basis, their English is impeccable and their general facilities are very helpful aka laundry, free internet access, drinks and free breakfast. I would definitely recommend this for a young backpacker/ gap year budget traveller who just wants to enjoy the company, rather than the comfort.

This has the makings of a great hostel but its not quite there yet. We stayed for one night then checked out and found somewhere better.

The staff are great, they took us we could come and hang out whenever after we checked out! They can organise loads of tours and transport etc. Its a great place to meet people and there are some nice communal areas to hang out in.

The dorm rooms however are roasting!! and the mattresses are pretty uncomfortable so all in all didn't get a great nights sleep. The toilet also flooded a lot which wasn't great.

I think the staff know they need to make some changes as they told us everyone checks out after one night so I think there are some plans to get a/c so things could improve!

I was sitting alone in the dorm and one of the men who works there came in and started hitting on me. I asked him to leave but continued to carry on so i left. About half an hour later another girl left because the same man did the same thing to her while she was alone. The next day the same man drove us to Vang Vieng and lost one of my friends bags and didn't really do much to help the situation but shrug his shoulders. Luckily i was with a group of people but i do not recommend this place for females traveling alone.

I stayed here by myself for a couple of nights, and while the place isn't terribly clean or new it has everything you need. There are some nice big showers with plenty of hot water, whcih was a pleasant surprise, and there is a balcony area where everyone gathers. It is an easy way to meet people, and for the price, you really can't go wrong. They organised a tour to the waterfalls for me, and my bus on to Vang Vieng -made it all very easy.

Okay so if your a clean freak. Don't come here. We did have a rat in our room, as there are not doors but just curtains seperating the rooms and no front door on the rooms, just an open door leading to a balcony. dont expect pests to not come in, and dont expect minimal noise and privacy.

But if you like to stay up late, stay here. Laos has a policy so all bars close at 11pm.. yes 11pm. I know. What to do? go to the spicylaos, You buy drink all night - its the only place where they dont lock their doors by 12. We spent our first nights elsewhere but came to spicy, one night we even had to jump fence and bash on some poor asians window to get in. so dont bother staying elsewhere if you dont want to be doing this.

The balcony is full of people so its enjoyable. good breakfast purchases and relatively ok showers. price is dirt cheap.

BEWARE: Do not stay at spicy laos Vang Vieng, its their new hostel. its a shack with no front, you might as well be sleeping on a hammock for insects to eat you alive.

BEWARE OF THE PINK EYE: vang vieng party goers all get pinkeye, so if you stay in hostels in laos, have your own pillow case or scarf around your pillow or you will catch it!

We stayed here for 2 nights in a 6 bed dorm and then decided to move somewhere else. It is very cheap to stay here but I guess you get what you pay for - the room was pretty dismal (paint peeling off, old, creaky doors etc). The one good thing is that it is a good way to meet people so probably good for people travelling by themselves. Although there is a Spicythai in Chiang Mai under the same brand, we met people that stayed there and said that it was way nicer than the one in Laos.

Stayed here in November. Was at first a bit dismayed as they had somehow managed to lose my booking, but they put me up in a bed in the hall for the first night!! The hostel is great though, friendly staff, organises lots of cool activities and a nice communal area which is great for meeting other travellers

Tis a bit pricy for a hostel, but IMO its a price worth paying if you're travelling solo. maybe not if you're with other people though...
