“Nice guest house, but light sleepers beware!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 15, 2011

I spent three nights at this guesthouse. There are many positive aspects I can highlight: I was lucky enough to get a room with a view of the Mekong river, and the balcony is lovely. The staff are very kind and friendly. You can drop your laundry off with them and within <24 hours, it comes back clean and neatly folded for 10,000 Kip/kilo (~$1.20). Breakfast is served outdoors on the patio, also overlooking the Mekong. Wifi is available.

My main source of dissatisfaction is the paper-thin walls. I could hear the person in the room NEXT to mine snoring. Loudly. So much so, that I had to wear earplugs. The other drawback is that even for a three-night stay, they never came once to make the bed or replace the towels.

Overall, I still enjoyed my stay but the drawbacks are worth highlighting.

Had a lovely stay and found the staff to be great. We were privvy to the $10 price hike for peak season but think it was worth it for the location. Not cheap at $50 for the better rooms but if like us you are willing to pay a slight premium to be away from the 'can't pay much for anything' backpacker crowd it is a must. The location is certainly at the better end of the road, bang between the main attractions, fronting the river and sorrounded by the best hotels and restaurants and this showed while having tranquil evenings on the balcony with little to no traffic outside. Only annoyance which was good the first morning but not after was the gong that woke the monks up over the river. I could possibly give up the possessions, maybe the women, but getting up at 4am should be enough to put anyone off the idea!!!

We arrived in the hotel very early in the morning after a grueling bus ride from the capital city - Vientiane.
It was really a rough night on the road so the welcoming guesthouse was a "manna from heaven" for my husband and I.
It is owned by an affluent Lao family whose pictures are all over the guesthouse.
The room was elaborate. Furniture made of heavy wood was abundant in the room: the bed, the drawer, the cabinets, etc.
I thought for a while that my "allergies" may act up as it always do when surrounded by "antique" like furniture.
But surprisingly, we had a very peaceful sleep.
The people at the reception were warm enough, even letting us borrow an old LAOS Lonely Planet.
Would definitely recommend it to friends who'd go to that part of the globe.

It was the perfect guesthouse for our stay in Luang Prabang! From the initial warm greeting to our final goodbye ten days later our host made sure that we were very well looked after. The accommodation was comfortable and the location was arguably the best in Luang Prabang for our 10 days. Phonsiravan, the owner of Alounsavath, speaks excellent English and is a warm and caring person. She treats staff and clients like family. She gave us good advice and helped us arrange local tours at reasonable prices. For example, she suggested that we go to the Traditional Medical Lao Massage place down the road from the guesthouse and we had exceptionally great massages. There is lots to do in Luang Prabang and this in our opinion is the best place to stay. We highly recommend Alounsavath Guesthouse.

Room Tip: We stayed in two different rooms - one with a view and one without - both were equally excellent. If...

This was my second trip to Luang Prabang and I earlier stayed in two other guest houses. This was by far the best experience. Everyone has their own standard to judge by - and my main standard while traveling in Asia is whether I feel both comfortable (i.e. clean pleasant facilities), welcome, and can learn and experience something of the local culture. The Alounsavath rate highly in all my categories because (i) I thought the location was perfect, along the Mekong and within easy walking distance of the good restaurants and main street of town, (ii) the 3 rooms my group stayed in were just lovely, the 2 upstairs facing the river and one downstairs (the downstairs one is good for someone who doesn't want stairs or to take their shoes off all the time when going in and out and doesn't mind a little noise from upstairs - and the two large upstairs room fabulous for quiet sitting on the porch and reading and (iii) the manager, Phone (a woman who speaks perfect English), is wonderfully helpful. She will help you arrange for offerings so you can go around the corner in the early mornings and give food to the long lines of saffron-robed monks. She helped me arrange for a memorial rite in her local temple for a friend of mine who had recently died. And she also invited us to participate with her at her temple on Buddha Day, when the local people give donations for their family members who have died. She also gave us directions for a great place to buy local textiles and arranged for a seamstress for us so we could have a local skirt made. In addition, she has a car and driver and arranged for a car and driver for us to go to Nong Khiaw for an overnight trip. Everything you could want in a guest hotel -- at very reasonable cost. I would like to return and stay there for a month . . .

Room Tip: Top front two rooms are large with wood floors and porch overlooking Mekong. Bottom front room has...

Great location, friendly staff, clean well maintained rooms with nice views of the Mekong!

It was lovely to have breakfast on the banks of the Mekong - the coffee was interesting though!
