“Very interesting”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 7, 2013

Sadly very little evidence of any restoration or conservation since my last visit 12 years ago. The wonderful heritage here seems to be crumbling away in contrast to the amazing restoration work being done by the Aga Khan in the northern areas.

“Extraordinary”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 7, 2013

Thank goodness UNESCO and other funders are helping to restore this fort/palace. Even looted and damaged, it is clear that it was extraordinary. You can see and touch the carvings in the marble that were once filled with jewels. Enough is left to imagine the artistry, paintings, fountains, and carvings. You can see the bullet holes from when the fort was attacked. Highly recommend hiring a good guide.

“Not just a Fort, almost an old city!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 6, 2013

This fort is not just a fort, it's a wonderful big place, where emperors lived a long time ago surronded by many beautiful signs. I recommend to use a guide to help you make a fast and richer tour (negotiate first).

“A Mougal emperor's citadel, a tourist's dream!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 29, 2013

Built by Emperor Akbar, this massive fort was the epicenter of his empire and the secular nature of his reign is evident by the presence of the Badshahi Mosque, the Sikh Gurdwara and the ruins of a Hindu temple all nearby. The food street behind the mosque is a pilgrimage for the foodies and famous Minar e Pakistan can be seen from the ramparts of the fort. A tourist guide is very helpful as otherwise one does not understand the intricacies of this unique architecture. The Diwane Aam, Diwane Khaas and Sheesh Mahal are all having a history of their own and a guide can tell you all that.
