Mandalay City Hotel

When entering this hotel one can think it is in some creepy building under the construction. But after passing the entrance it gives you a view of spacious forecourt (parking area) and real entrance to the hotel along an artificial lake (with lights during the night) so first impression is passing away slowly. Hotel is right in the center, not far from the Night Market Street and King´s Palace wall. Lobby is small but staff is nice and friendly. Always ready to help you with any of your demands with a smile (what really is a plus). There is no lift in the hotel so you need to take stairs but porters will help you with luggage. Look of the rooms is a bit modest (needs some uplift), with fungi in the bathrooms and constant problems with an AC. Otherwise beds are comfortable and clean and there is also safe in each room. As hotel is "hidden" in the middle of buildings it offers quiet surrounding. Big disadvantage is VERY slow internet in the hotel. But what brings you more joy is restaurant behind the lobby (great menu, not so expensive comparing to other hotel restaurants with good wine offer) and diverse buffet breakfast options. I also liked swimming pool area. It is small but you feel cozy there, not disturbed by anyone. Talking about atmosphere I just had continuous feeling like traveling in time to the old colonial British era. Hotel gives you everything necessary you need on your trip and it is a good option for 1-2 nights stay. But if you are looking for something more classy, better remain away from this hotel.

The driveway into the hotel and then the walk by the pond (with turtle and fish) was very pleasant and the welcome board with our names was a nice touch. We had to walk up two stories as there is no lift but our luggage was delivered to the room efficiently.

The room was fairly simple but reasonable at the cost. Location is very good with lots of small restaurants nearby and not far from the Palace and the markets.

If, like most tourists, you are spending a brief period in Mandalay as part of a wider tour of Myanmar, you could do a lot worse than stay at the Mandalay City Hotel. The location is the biggest advantage of this hotel. Very central and tucked down a short walkway of a mere 50 metres, the approach is delightful as you walk on a wooden bridge over a small carp pond (with resident turtle) into the lobby. Just the other side of the small pond is a modest size swimming pool - quite unusual for a centrally located hotel. Reception area is good and staff friendly and welcoming. There are no lifts in the hotel so anyone struggling with stairs is best to request a ground floor room. Food is OK. Rooms are on the small size and pretty basic, but clean. Apart from and longer day trips you might do by car/taxi it is an easy walk from the hotel to many of the busy central streets of Mandalay. There is plenty to see and plenty of good restaurants within easy distance. However, the fabled "night market" we thought was a big disappointment. All-in-all if you are staying for 2 or 3 nights then this is the place to be, but if staying much longer, I suspect there is more comfortable accommodation further out.

Room Tip: There are three floors and no lift (elevator) so if you don't want to use the stairs ask for a l...

As part of a tour package, I had a two night stay and a one night stay within a 12 day period. Both stays were below expectations. The room size was small, paint was old and dirty, bathroom tile was old and dirty, carpet was old. Bed sheets were clean. Hotel internet connectivity was terrible. It was suppose to work in the lobby. But on both stays, I came down at 10pm, midnight, 3am and 5am and connectivity was unusable. Mosquitos were eating me alive while in the lobby. Asking the front desk to reboot the router did not solve the problem. Then magically, at 5:30am (on both stays), full bandwidth occurred for about 15 minutes before it reverted back to slow, intermittent connectivity level. The restaurant menu variety was good and reasonably priced but service was friendly but very very slow. On my second stay, there was no hot water for a 5am shower. The 5am morning prayer was loud but didn't affect me as I was already awake. But after calling the front desk, it seemed like the hot water switch was powered on as there was instantious hot water. I would not recommend this hotel even at the low price. The hotel's lcation was not important to me.

The hotel is situated one street from the moat surrounding the palace so it is quite central and there are several eateries within walking distance, although the streets tend to be poorly lit and crossing major roads can be stressful. The room is simply furnished with little in terms of decor or refinement, but otherwise, the room size, cleanliness and functionality of the toilet and air-conditioning was fine.

Internet is available at the lobby although typically slow as in most of Myanmar we experienced. Situated just off the main road, noise levels were low and the breakfast spread was better than expected and service was good. Perhaps the hotel is starting to show it’s age but there’s little to complain about if you manage your expectations.

Pleasant simple, but reliable hotel. Would recommend this quiet, but busy hotel to families, couples, singles, and business customers. Internet only available in the reception area. Food very nice, and also some excellent simple little eateries close by. Would come here again!

This hotel is very clean, friendly in an excellent location if you want to experience Mandalay. Only disadvantage can be the city noises - the early call to prayer in the morning - but as it is behind the buildings on the main street it is surprisingly quiet.
