“Good enough hotel”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 5, 2013

Stayed 2 nights late March, a very basic hotel. The hotel was having a number of blackouts (as most of Myanmar does) and thus the hotel was reliant on their own generator. This meant that the air conditioning in the lobby and dining room and the wifi did not work. However, the hotel was comfortable and clean. Some disabled or elderly guests may have difficulties getting in and out of the high bath tub. I was woken up the first morning by the nearby mosque. Breakfast was good and the hotel is close to a number of cheap eats. Overall, good enough hotel

Room Tip: If you have difficulty climbing stairs ask for a ground floor room

Stayed 3 nights and were reasonably comfortable although the room was quite basic. But the important thing was that everything worked. Asked for a "garden room" which may have been a mistake as our sleep was disturbed by tour groups making early departures. Very limited safe eating choices nearby so ate dinner in the hotel each night with no problems. Buffet breakfast was plentiful but not as good as other hotels we stayed in during our time in Myanmar. Staff were very obliging. Wifi was unreliable but when there was a connection it was fine. Would not opt to stay in central Mandalay again should we return: very busy and lacking in charm.

This is not The Ritz, but doesnt pretend to be. Its a good, basic, city hotel. The rooms are small, basically furnished, with pretty poor views from the windows...largely into local apartments or the mosque. The aircon is poor...we switched room twice and still needed the engineer to 'fix' the air unit...it still struggled. Room otherwise is simple. Bathroom, similar. Again though, all perfectly functional in a 1970's kind of way. Worth saying that the staff were very helpful and pleasant.
The restaurant is good. Pricey relative to local comparison, but not to western prices. Food was good, and since its a taxi ride to alternative s, then its worth eating here....there is a small shop opposite to buy beer...save a dollar or two for a drink in your room.
As seems the norm, there is free WiFi in the lobby which we were warned would be unreliable, however each morning it was dependable and relatively fast.
Location is good - short walk to the main market, and short taxi to the Palace...its not as pleasant walk along busy, main streets.

Room Tip: Don't expect too much and you'll be fine.

Booking was seemless, answered emails promptly, wasn't first choice but was getting worried from reading other reviews, Mandalay is very much demand exceeds supply. Paid US$56.00 for a superior twin, overpriced as is most of the country. The check-in was fast, very competent front of house. Breakfast was exceptional, all kinds of bread, eggs as you like them, very good omelette, as well as local foods, service quick & efficient.Free WiFi in lobby, dining room & outside areas including pool area. Pool looked good but no time. Accept only $'s in the bar. We had room 401 on the 3rd fl, no lift, it was at the back end, overlooking rooftops. Ob no water shortage as it took at least 5 mins to get the water hot, & the floor flooded,as the drain had a lip stopping the water flow, the aircon was just passable & our room was fairly small. There is a wardrobe to put the robes unfortunately you could hardly get to it as our beds, being twin, blocked the path. The robe also made using a powerpoint useless. To use the kettle had to go to the bathroom point as the one on the bench didn't work, & there was a bent prong on the plug that looked very unsafe, one point worked near the bed. They also booked the ferry to Bagan, tho not the one i requested, at no additional cost.

Hard to fault hotel, other than to condemn the slowest lifts in Asia. Only two, and sometimes
jammed between floors.Easier to walk three flights than wait.Swimming pool was great but water too cold. Food good. American breakfast if desired. Rudyard Kipling bar. Wi-Fi very unreliable, yet was free. Staff eager to please. A good place to stay - but expensive.

We knew the hotel would be quite basic from the information were were provide by our tour operator, so the utilitarian layout of the rooms was not a surprise. Having said that, the bed was comfortable and the air conditioning, which was near the bed worked well. The bathroom is quite tired but clean and had everything you needed.

We had lunch there on the day we arrived, and one of our friends accidental broke a glass, and was informed that she needed to be charged $1 as it was management policy. A bit odd, as the glass was not an expensive one, and we reduced the tip accordingly. the lunch was very good, and better than expected.

there is a small pool which we did not try out

The breakfast was more extensive than we had expected, although the orange juice was not real orange !, but it did start serving very early to accommodate early departures. Wi-fi is available at no charge, but only works in the hotel lobby.

I had a real problem getting a hair dryer and had to ask 3 times before I got one, but this was a small point.

We were advised that the hotel was located near to a mosque and we might be woken up by the call for early morning prayers. Our rooms overlooked the back of the hotel, and while this provided no view, the call for prayers could only be heard very faintly, so it was not a problem.

Room Tip: Ask for a room to the back of the hotel

This hotel meets the basic standards - it's clean, quiet and well located, a bit of an oasis in the middle of a busy city. Breakfast was included and it was basic and gave a good start to the day. The staff don't have much English and borrowing a hair dryer and getting some insect spray for our room was challenging. We were bitten by mosquitoes on all nights we stayed in the hotel despite spraying and wearing tropical strength insect repellent.
