“Best breakfast in Myanmar.”
Reviewed March 23, 2013

Booking was seemless, answered emails promptly, wasn't first choice but was getting worried from reading other reviews, Mandalay is very much demand exceeds supply. Paid US$56.00 for a superior twin, overpriced as is most of the country. The check-in was fast, very competent front of house. Breakfast was exceptional, all kinds of bread, eggs as you like them, very good omelette, as well as local foods, service quick & efficient.Free WiFi in lobby, dining room & outside areas including pool area. Pool looked good but no time. Accept only $'s in the bar. We had room 401 on the 3rd fl, no lift, it was at the back end, overlooking rooftops. Ob no water shortage as it took at least 5 mins to get the water hot, & the floor flooded,as the drain had a lip stopping the water flow, the aircon was just passable & our room was fairly small. There is a wardrobe to put the robes unfortunately you could hardly get to it as our beds, being twin, blocked the path. The robe also made using a powerpoint useless. To use the kettle had to go to the bathroom point as the one on the bench didn't work, & there was a bent prong on the plug that looked very unsafe, one point worked near the bed. They also booked the ferry to Bagan, tho not the one i requested, at no additional cost.

Hard to fault hotel, other than to condemn the slowest lifts in Asia. Only two, and sometimes
jammed between floors.Easier to walk three flights than wait.Swimming pool was great but water too cold. Food good. American breakfast if desired. Rudyard Kipling bar. Wi-Fi very unreliable, yet was free. Staff eager to please. A good place to stay - but expensive.

We knew the hotel would be quite basic from the information were were provide by our tour operator, so the utilitarian layout of the rooms was not a surprise. Having said that, the bed was comfortable and the air conditioning, which was near the bed worked well. The bathroom is quite tired but clean and had everything you needed.

We had lunch there on the day we arrived, and one of our friends accidental broke a glass, and was informed that she needed to be charged $1 as it was management policy. A bit odd, as the glass was not an expensive one, and we reduced the tip accordingly. the lunch was very good, and better than expected.

there is a small pool which we did not try out

The breakfast was more extensive than we had expected, although the orange juice was not real orange !, but it did start serving very early to accommodate early departures. Wi-fi is available at no charge, but only works in the hotel lobby.

I had a real problem getting a hair dryer and had to ask 3 times before I got one, but this was a small point.

We were advised that the hotel was located near to a mosque and we might be woken up by the call for early morning prayers. Our rooms overlooked the back of the hotel, and while this provided no view, the call for prayers could only be heard very faintly, so it was not a problem.

Room Tip: Ask for a room to the back of the hotel

This hotel meets the basic standards - it's clean, quiet and well located, a bit of an oasis in the middle of a busy city. Breakfast was included and it was basic and gave a good start to the day. The staff don't have much English and borrowing a hair dryer and getting some insect spray for our room was challenging. We were bitten by mosquitoes on all nights we stayed in the hotel despite spraying and wearing tropical strength insect repellent.

Medium sized hotel in the city centre. Tucked away behind other buildings so quiet. Lobby and restaurant well appointed. Nice pool. Staff helpful and well trained.
We had to request a room change since we booked a queen room but were put in a twin room. Room a little tired and small. Shower over bath so may not be suitable for elderly and infirm.
As mentioned in Lonely P, dining choices in this area are few. Try Aye Myit Tar in 81st St, within walking distance - see separate review. Hotel also close to Night Market and Seven Diamonds travel agency.
Problem is that central Mandalay is busy, noisy and dirty. Walking around is difficult due to crowded (with stuff spilling out from shops) and broken sidewalks, and difficulty crossing roads, which means you are dependent on hiring wheeled transport for anything more than a few blocks. However, is a vibrant city with interesting ethnic mix. Depends what you're into, I guess.
Taxis are cheap and drivers reliable, however.

Nothing to write home about but perfectly adequate, functional hotel in central location. The room was fairly basic but clean and comfotable and there was plenty of hot water. Buffet supper one evening was poor but chocolate cake and fruit plate was fine. Comfortable lobby area, helpful staff.

Great big room with comfy bed and range of seating. Good wifi (for Myanmar) great breakfast of local delicacies, not a huge range of western food but the range was very varied and a great way to start the day. Location is central with some good restaurants within close proximity.
