This hotel is a haven from crazy, busy, noisy Mandalay. Every time we came off the street into the palm lined courtyard, we could feel the stress slip away. The staff were friendly and in spite of being busy, were helpful with advice on money changing (MIDB), local food, (Daw Shan Noodle), and local Taxi tours.

The breakfasts were great and we enjoyed the pool and the restaurant bar. Our room was to the back with a view of the neighbor's balconies. We found it quite interesting to get a glimpse of daily Mandalay life, e.g. Mama hanging clothes on the roof and family watching TV in a recliner on the balcony. We also heard the Muslim call to prayer, but it fondly reminded us of our trip to Turkey and we did not awaken after the first time.

I would definitely recommend this hotel and the entire hotel staff who were top notch.

Really reliable hotel in a curious courtyard in the centre of downtown. Fantastic pool (very unexpected in this location) and clean and pleasant rooms. Breakfast buffet provides Euro and Asian options which is fun. Completely lovely staff - very friendly, attentive and helpful. Would really recommend this place and the cocktails are pretty good too. One word of warning: the back of the hotel is about 5m away from a mosque Minaret - the morning call to prayer is thus somewhat penetrating in the early hours.

I stayed here for 3 nights in Jan 2012. I really liked this hotel. It was everything my flash 5 star hotel in Yangon was not. The staff to a person is genuinely helpful, friendly and willing to do whatever is necessary to make your stay a pleasant one.

My room (deluxe) was spacious, spotless and extremely quiet. The bed was comfortable....firm the way I like. Good air con, cable tv with good(altho limited) choice in english language channels.
Food in the restaurant was pretty good and reasonably priced. A real bonus to a stay here is the lovely pool which I used twice.
On departure, the entire staff stood in line to thank me and wish me bon voyage! Highly recommended!!!

This is a true oasis tucked away behind high walls at the entrance. Very private quiet inside, which is a lovely change from the hustle and bustle of Mandalay city traffic, noise, dust and fumes. The staff are very friendly and accommodating and the rooms are well appointed and comfy.

The swimming pool is also very clean and well maintained. Not heated though.

The hotel recommends a local doctor for the foreigners who can come to the hotel if necessary, with full staff (nurse and jnr doctor), equipment and medication.

I'm a fan of Myanmar--- it's people and culture, and this year (2012) is the third time I've spent a few days at the Mandalay City Hotel.
It's a nice, quiet hotel set back from the street area of Mandalay. You enter thru a 'walled' front gate, tht serves more as a noise barrier than a security issue.
The hotel itself is well kept, clean and the staff is always courteous and helpful. Some minor problems with spoken English at the reception-- but nothing that caused any inconvenience.
The restaurant breakfast buffet is moderate-- pretty much geared to the fact that the crowd isn't normally huge, and the wait staff is very helpful and friendly.
Other meals at the restaurant have always been a little expensive compared to eating out locally, but not certainly prohibitive-- a decent meal (without alcohol for about $15.00 US and can be a little less.
All together an enjoyable place to stay.

Room Tip: The 'deluxe' rooms are only about $10.00 more thatn the standard, and are a little roomier.

Very good hotel in the center of the city, but without a dust and noise of Mandalay city center. Smooth and friendly service, nice meal (ok breakfast and good 'thought not cheap restaurant), big rooms (no fancy, but quite ok), decent rates. no currency exchange or spa, but a shadow courtyard and a pool.

An almost flawless hotel within their price category.
Convenient location close to the enclosure walls of Mandalay royal palace. Good places to eat and shop are available either in the immediate vicinity of the hotel or just a little further.
The hotel is accessed by a nicely tunneled entrance isolating the lobby area from the city streets. Good selection of food - definitely unusual in Myanmar.
Rooms, bathrooms and staff almost perfect.
Prices are nice.

Weaknesses:
No elevator - might be inconvenient for guests allocated on higher floors.
Wi-fi available only in the lobby area and functioning very poor even there.
Last not least - an unexpected intrusion of discomfort is occasionally experienced when the main supplies of electrical power are off and the hotel has to turn on its auxiliary power generator. In some rooms of the hotel the noise level from that generator, as heard through the windows, is just intolerable.
