We had a decent stay here, although for what you get it's pricey, even by Burmese standards. The rooms are clean and relatively comfortable.  The wifi is horribly slow, so bad you wish they just didn't have it, and it only works in the lobby. It has a good location close to the market and some good beer stations down the street (there's an excellent one on 82nd and 30th).  One annoying thing is they charge you for using the phone which is a necessity to make reservations when traveling in Burma.  They were even going to charge us for them to use the phone to call us a taxi.  I would expect a budget place to get away with that, but not a hotel like this.  The breakfast was awful.

This is better suited for tour groups where they need lots of room for people but don't have to deal with any amenities.

Stay here as part of G Adventure Tour of Myanmar. A good city centre locations. Cycle shop round the corner should you need to pick up cycle to explore the city. 5 minutes walk to find bars and restaurants. Good breakfast offered by hotel and good wifi connection.
Rooms basic but acceptable for short stay and safety deposits boxes available in hotel reception.

If you're looking for something a little nicer than the standard guesthouses but you're also not wanting to pay loads for a really nice hotel we found this to be a really nice in-between option. The rooms and bathrooms are nice and you know you're never going to have to worry about it being damp or the linen not being clean, but it's not super fancy either. The breakfasts are buffet styled and are nice enough and the rooms and bathrooms are really spacious (and finally not a wet-room shower!) and the beds are comfortable. Wifi is very sporadic and only available in the lobby. We stayed there on two occasions and were really happy both times.

hotel is well situated downtown close to some restaurant/bar/bike rental options. rooms are fairly comfortable, bathroom clean and good hot shower. Breakfast reasonably varied.
very friendly staff at reception and breakfast room.
I especially appreciated the assistance with booking flights - two travel agents told me all flights were fully booked but the hotelstaff managed to get me two seats!

Ok, this is not Hilton but after traveling in Myanmar I realized that you need to adjust your expectations. Hotels in Myanmar are way overpriced for what they are and with Myanmar being overrun by tourists willing to pay any price to secure a place to crush over night you can't be choosy and they have little incentive to improve. Most places I stayed in Myanmar have been very tired and due for major renovation. But this is Myanmar and not States, not even Thailand, so the room was reasonable clean, hot shower, working a/c and window at $45 per night at first seemed pricy but at the end of the trip I realized it was a fair price. I looked at Silver Swan Hotel, nearby and I will tell you I would choose Silver Star for a few dollars more without hesitation. The hotel is located within walking distance to Royal Palace and some descent restaurants but it is 10-15 minutes walk. The hotel has descent (for Myanmar) wi-fi Internet in the lobby. One major plus for me was that the hotel withstood 6.8 degree earthquake without any damage. Pretty scary experience but at the end turned out to be ok.

Room Tip: BBB restaurant is the best I found in Mandalay. V-Cafe hip by local standard is ok to visit the foo...

The Silver Star Hotel in Mandalay in its publicity brochure claims to be just a ten minute walk from the railway station. It might be an exageration as it took us more than ten minutes by car to reach the hotel. Arriving after 11.00pm we showed our confirmation for a room for two people but were told in no uncertain terms by the male night reception staff - one of whom had to be woken up -that only single rooms were available and there could be no discussion on that. On entering the rooms we found each had twin beds and had been set up for double occupancy. We were astounded when shortly thereafter a room porter arrived to remove the facilities for one person from each room and we were told that only one bed could be used.

We returned to reception and enquired where we could get something to eat at the hotel or elsewhere in town as we had been travelling more than 11 hours. The unhelpful male receptionist said that it was not possible because everything closed in the town at 11.00pm. Imagine our surprise when we walked out of the hotel and nearby found an eating establishment open and doing good business. When we left at 1.00am it was still providing meals. So much for local knowledge by the male receptionists at the Silver Star Hotel.

On returning to the hotel we found the front door locked and again had to wake up a male receptionist to let us in.

In the morning the three ladies at reception were helpful, easy to talk to and concerned at the way we had been treated by the night staff. They offered to rectify the situation but by then it was too late and we had decided to check out cutting our stay at the hotel short by several days. As we had paid only for one night we had no problems in doing this.

At a room price of $32 per night including breakfast the hotel represents fair value. The rooms were clean, the bathroom had a bathtub and in spite of the porter taking some of the amenities, was well provisioned. Breakfast was unappetising with a limited range of food but there was plenty of bread to make up for it. The dining room staff was pleasant enough and willing to serve.

The hotel is conveniently located in the centre of Mandalay CBD but some distance from the railway station.

There is no doubt that our initial experience with the two male night receptionists influenced our opinion of the hotel. If the ladies on reception during the daytime had been at check in I am sure our experiences would have been more positive.

Would we stay at this hotel again? No way. Based on our experience there are better options nearby at similar prices.

Room Tip: Do not arrive at night!
