We choose this hotel for its central location, and because it was not what the alternatives seemed to be: tasteless multi-story buildings full of large groups of tourists. First impression was somewhat disappointing: the hotel is in the middle of very modest neighbourhood. On a closer look, the hotel is a gem: admittedly surrounded by the very poor but very real Burmese streetlife, inside the hotel compound one is exposed to the very friendly service and - by Burmese standards - tasteful interior. Rooms were more than adequate. The best Mandalay has to offer to the invidual traveller looking for a boutique hotel.

Every aspect of this small hotel reflects care and attention to detail. The rooms and grounds are beautiful, the food in the restaurant delicious, the atmosphere serene, and the staff incredibly hospitable. We awoke one morning to a torrential downpour; the staff was waiting at the front door with umbrellas to escort each guest the short distance to the dining room for breakfast, and waited to walk us back when finished. A lovely oasis in Mandalay.

The best staff out, especially HR Manager Mr Pyae Phyo and Mr San Yu Aung of the bell service department. Breakfast was a good sized buffet with plenty of choices, the restaurant was great Indian food very reasonably priced. Nothing was too much trouble, the ladies at reception even helped me correct my wearing of the longyi !
The setting was a little out of downtown which helped with noise levels, but still walking distance to a local market and various restaurants.
My only complaint was a column at the end of the bed which restricted the ability for two people to watch TV in bed. Small thing really, we weren't there to watch TV. The free cocktails by the pool were a nice touch and lead to meeting some interesting other guests. Overall, given the limited choices of quality hotels in Mandalay, I would recommend this hotel for the fantastic staff and award A for effort in an emerging country.

Room Tip: Get a front room, where you have a view over the trickling stream.

I was relaxed, emotionally healed by the stuffs' great hospitality and kindness.
Every time I was back from the bustle of Mandalay city, they warmly welcomed with cold towel and tea, and big smile.
They gave me some advice about many sorts of things, like transportations, rental bicycle, restaurants, and so on, according to my limited budget.
The building and room, including furniture and supplies are based on Shan style and has a great atmosphere to make me comfortable.
It was indeed an unforgettable hotel for me.

No real complaints about this hotel. The staff were fantastic right from when you arrive to when you leave. The free cocktails at poolside in the evening was a nice touch. My only complaint would be the small room size with side table beside bed pushed down the wrong way so you could not use draws because there wasn't enough room but if your trying to get into the best hotels in world category these little things will count against.

The choice is rather limited when it comes to hotels in Mandalay so I try to keep that in mind while writing this review.
First the positives:
-the small scale of the hotel is very pleasant
-breakfast selection quite large, quality for Myanmar was all right
-staff are trying their best and are very friendly and welcoming
-great to have a pool, even though it was small and had a rather chemical smell
-central location, very convenient

Some negatives:
-gym was being renovated, but no alternatives were provided even though we asked repeatedly
-our room was very tiny, and had absolutely NO view to speak of
-overcharged and inflated prices for everything, from minibar (a Coke would set you back $5) to laundry and even the bikes you could rent (which is highly recommended by the way, discovering Mandalay by bike was truly wonderful)
-wifi extremely slow, but this is more of a Myanmar problem than a specific hotel problem

For the price we paid, we would not return here. And when you do stay here, specifically ask for a front room, with a view over the pool. The rooms at the back side are no good.

Situated not too far from the main Palace, but in a small back road, the Hotel by the Red Canal is a funny little place; charming, friendly, and quirky.

The rooms are filled with teak furniture - well, crammed might be a better word for it! The rooms are not large, but the furniture is, so it can be a bit of a squeeze - but you don't mind because the furniture is so well made. Bathroom is also lovely. We had a small balcony overlooking the pool

The pool is very small, irregularly shaped, so not great for swimming in. They do have a free "happy hour" each evening, with free cocktails - worth doing.

The restaurant is slightly separate from the main building, but spacious and very nice; food was good, and staff were friendly.

Because the hotel is a bit squeezed in, the grounds are small, but the whole thing seems to work really well.
