“A good city hotel”
Reviewed September 1, 2012

We loved this hotel because of the staff and great vibe. The rooms are small however - in fact the smallest of any hotel we stayed at in Myanmar and our rooms had showers only and no bath. The hotel has a brilliant location for an evening stroll along the river or for getting to the Mandalay Palace a short walk away. Breakfast and lunch in the hotel restaurant were great. The hotel serves free snacks and tea during the day and in the evening we got free cocktails from 6.30 to 7.30pm and this was a brilliant idea as we were introduced to some very interesting drinks and had the opportunity to meet other people.

A quiet well located hotel with lovely small pool and happy hour at the end of a long hot day. Room size was nice but ours was way too dark. No natural light and no lamps, so a bit depressing in the room, but we were not in it much, fortunately. Staff friendly and the greeting at the street of cool tea and towels was refreshing. food was adequate.

Room Tip: ask for one on the front of the hotel, facing the pool side

In a few years, I'm certain there will be several more hotels to choose from – both in Mandalay and in Myanmar. For now, the Red Canal is about the best you can get in this bustling city by the Irrawaddy River.

The hotel itself isn't bad by any means, staff are friendly and helpful, rooms are clean and relatively comfortable. My overall impression is that everything felt dated – as if the Red Canal was in need of a renovation and upgrade of interior and facilities.

There's a restaurant adjacent to the hotel and the food is decent, but not much more. The advertised pool was not only small, it wasn't even functional during our stay (July, 2012).

There's not much to do around the hotel and so, you'll have to spend some time shuffling around town in cabs. Make sure you get a cab with seat belts and a driver with at least rudimentary English skills. One of our drivers didn't and when his car broke down and we refused to pay, it got a little complicated....

Even if the Red Canal is one of very few decent hotels in Mandalay, next time I'll probably stay at a place within walking distance to one of the many interesting market areas in the city.

It's a quaint boutique hotel overflowing with charm and warmth. The entire staff from the greeting party to the front desk to housekeeping to waiters/waitresses were very friendly and pleasant. The rooms are very clean and spacious. The breakfast spread was more than adequate. The pool was a delight especially after a hot day out taking in the sights. walking around the neighbourhod is very safe and more often than not we find ourselves at a local tavern.
My wife and I had a great time and we recommend this gem!

Room Tip: All the rooms are great...no worries!

can't say enough about this hotel: beautiful, spotless, eager to please staff. there was a mix up with my reservation and the hotel staff was more than accommodating. Located in a suburban neighborhood that I enjoyed roaming around in alone on the half day I had free. Food in the restaurant is all it is billed to be and well priced. Room was a fabulous oasis/refuge after touring Mandalay and environs. Would book again in a flash. Excellent all around.

Room Tip: definitely confirm where your room is located. The pool views are the best and well worth the differ...

This is a really friendly hotel with good food but ohhhh was I bitten. I think it was some sort of bed bug as they only appeared after sleeping but I was with my husband and he wasn't bitten at all. This does tie in with research that says that 50% of the population are immune. I am one of the unlucky ones. So, if you know you are immune, you will enjoy your stay. We loved Burma anyway.

Room Tip: They have some rooms which have no window as they are built into the hill. Try to avoid these if yo...

Nice boutique hotel down a side street on the Red Canal - don't be misled by the name, the Red Canal is little more than a muddy ditch. Hotel nice and clean and staff friendly and helpful. Room good but our room had no view - other than a wall only a few feet away - we never opened the curtains so barely saw the daylight. Good restaurant but food not quite what you might expect from descriptions on the menu. I had a naan bread that was more like a pizza! The vegetarian Gandhi set meal was excellent though. Free cocktails available by the pool each evening.

Room Tip: Choose a room with a view.
