Family of 4 we caught a taxi up the hill, heading up for sunset the taxi's are hanging around the bottom. We paid $5 for the ride up, glad we did.360 view around Mandalay, well worth the visit. Small fee to use the camera. Lovely sunset pictures. Lots of Burmese English students wanting to practice their English. Our kids are 11 & 12 so they made some friends and really enjoyed talking to the other kids. We were invited to visit the English school which we did a couple of nights later. Worth the effort. We walked down the 1,700 and something steps and had damn sore calves the next day.

One of us is handicapped and cannot walk stairs. Good thing there is an elevator. First we had to put our shoes in a paid box, then wait for elevator. After waiting half hour they just told us the elevator was closed for the day! Had even trouble getting money back, lady was too busy with her mobile phone and would not listen.

The Mandalay Hill wasn't very exciting but there were many locals so it was a nice cultural experience. Lots of the typical souvenir shops but we kept walking. We got our photo taken there on a funny heart decoration for less than $1 and printed. We also got our palms read which was over priced but a fun thing to do. It is a decent walk up but not strenuous as there are many stopping points.

Nice, new, temple at the hill. View is fine, but if you come for the sunset, consider the rooftop bar at the Ayarwadda River Hotel

I understand that the Mandalay Hill is well known for sunset seeing...but not really. I was not that impressed, especially compared to Bagan sunset. BUT, it is interesting...because you can see so many dirty feet moving around (and taking elevators!). Also the temple is very shiny!! The trip up/down the hill was also interesting...it was so crowded...the hassle is interesting and worth.
