Make sure you go early morning that u could enjoy the sun rises. You can go up with your car to the upper parking. If you haven't been there although you have been to Mandalay means you hv never been to Mandalay ;)

Two reasons make this visit at sunset a must-do: the views of Mandalay and the river are very beautiful, plus you can engage in great conversations with monks and English students who come to practice their language skills and are always happy to share stories, ask questions and spend quality time with you.
The views are 360 degrees, so you get to see the sunset on the many temples, river and fields, not only the town itself.
Climbing to the top can be done via walking paths (around 45 minutes climb) or taking a taxi or motorbike to the top. (Tuktuks cannot go up the hill, so avoid that option)
Foreigners need to pay a small fee to visit the pagoda at the top.

While visiting Mandalay our tour guide took us to Mandalay Hill for a sunset visit. A must see at that time of day.

My taxi dropped us at the gate, leave the shoes there and going up by escalator, going down by escalator in different place, so you have to walk about 100m outside back to where your shoes.
It is beautiful to get many photos.
I visited many temples, pagodas in Mandalay, Bagan, Yangon and every where you have to left your shoes out ( all the way out, not at the door). I have no problem with that, but the way from there is dirty and your feet may get burned in the hot season.
Too many gift shops, took 2/3 the way ( both sides) all the way to the pagoda house.

Close to the kings palace this hill overlooks Mandalay. For taking pictures the best time is early in the morning or at sunset. Busy on public holidays with locals. Not easy to find the park place. Going up by steps without a car is possible, can be a challenge.

One of the most impressive sunsets I ever saw. The sky was truly red.

There are many monks who try to talk in English with you, what a great experience. If you are in Mandalay, go there!

A great place to catch the sunset over Mandalay! Remember to wear sandals or flip flops on your sightseeing day in Mandalay. The ideal footwear 'easy-to-wear and take-off' type. The truck ride up into the hill is worth it too.

Mandalay Hill is a must see when in Mandalay, especially at sunset. The Temple at the top of Mandalay Hill is impressive in its own right but without a doubt the main reason most tourists go there is to view the stunning sunsets. Don't forget your camera.

My wife and I (mid 60s) walked the 1729 steps to the top, barefooted (one spends a lot of time in Myanmar barefooted when visiting religious sites!)! There is a lift and an escalator available from around half way up, which area you can reach by taxi/tuk tuk. Great sunset view if there is no cloud cover, which unfortunately there was on our day but it did not distract from the visit. We then walked down again. We found a plaque dedicated to the Royal Berkshire Regiment in 1945, which regiment my father was in during most of the Burma campaign ..... a very poignant end to the day.
