Don't take a taxi to the top, but climb the stairs. You will meet at least one monk who will try to improve his English language and there are other places of interests you will miss! From the top you have a beautiful view over Mandaly.

This is an excellent spot to get a good view over the whole of Mandalay - just don't expect to be there alone, you will be joining hundreds of other tourists and locals!

We weren't really sure what to expect coming up here. It's one temple and a good all around view over Mandalay, seeing Pagodas scattered in the distance. We were going to stay for the sunset but didn't because it looked too high to catch a silhouette and not sure if the temples on the east side would catch the sinking sun light. It also got more crowded towards the sunset time. The inside of the temple is your typical turquoise mirror look.
If you find a better place or are short on time, you're not going to miss that much.

There's nothing among the temples at the top of this climb that you will find impressive. The climb itself is not exactly pleasant either when barefoot in the hot sun. Given the historical significance of the hill, you should climb this after making a visit to the nearby monasteries and temples. Best part you will find is the view about halfway up. Unfortunately not very conducive for photos given the trees in the way, but still an amazing sight to see (especially kuthodaw and sandamuni)

Its a long walk up on bare feet to get to the top of Mandalay Hill. Its a great experience at sunset. Young Buddhist monks make this trip up everyday to practice their English with the foreigners. Great views of the city down below, but you do have to pay a camera fee. One downside is that many tourists are photographing the monks. We were having a conversation with two monks when an Italian lady asked us if we could step out of her photo frame while she photographed the two monks we were talking to! Dont worry about the walk down after sunset. The walkway is well lighted.
