“Decent views and few tourists make it a good visit”
Reviewed November 27, 2012

I visited Mandalay Hill in September 2012, and found it definitely worth the visit. I walked barefoot to the very top of the hill, however, the best views are the first few stops along the way, so if you are in a rush, don't feel like you missed out on a lot if you didn't go to the zenith. There were very few tourists in my hour long climb, and mostly just locals selling their wares (they weren't pushy by any means and mostly ignored me). There are also fortune tellers if you are into that sort of thing.

Be aware that there are two entrances to go up the hill, and it's very easy to go down the wrong one on the way down. If you do go the wrong way down, as I did, the walk is only about 5 minutes, although it can be a pain because you're bare foot. There are motos who can take you to the other entrance for almost nothing.

“great view on the city and the enviroment”
Reviewed November 26, 2012

This is the only occasion to get a real good impression from above on the size and closer environment of Mandalay. Don't miss it.

“Great view of Mandalay.”
Reviewed November 26, 2012

Luckily we were taken up most of the way in a car by our guide and driver otherwise you have to climb over 700 hundred steps. Very good view over Mandalay and lots of people selling items along the steps to the tourist.

“Well worth the visit”
Reviewed November 25, 2012

Mandalay Hill lies to the North East corner of the city of Mandalay and at a height of approximately 800 feet affords those willing to make the trip to the top an impressive view over the City of Mandalay, the surrounding farmland, the Mandalay plains and in the distance the Shan Hills and the Aye Yarwady River.

Access to the summit is either by one of four covered stairways or the easier option is by road and then lift to the top. At the summit is the Sataungpyei Pagoda as well as several hawker stalls. A small fee is charged if you wish to use your camera.

The hill has a religious significance hence the number of Pagodas and monastery located on its slopes. It is said that Buddha forecast that a great city would one day be founded at the foot of the mountain and this became a reality in 1859 when the town of Mandalay was inaugurated.

It is recommended that you visit the summit to observe the sunset however we did not do this preferring to visit during late morning. Even at this time there were a large number of Burmese present at the summit who were visiting it from other parts of Myanmar. The Aye Yarwady River was in flood at the time of visit to Mandalay and this is amply shown in the attached photo.

It is well worth a visit to Mandalay Hill at the beginning of your stay in Mandalay, the panoramic view permitting you to orient yourself in relation to the city.

“Tremendous view of the city.”
Reviewed November 23, 2012

You can drive up the hill, or park and walk, barefoot, from the bottom. It is a long walk, up many many steps, and worth it. People are selling wares, food and drinks along the way. I did not find them aggressive or bothersome.
The temple at the top is very interesting and impressive. As you walk around it you overlook the city and open farmland on the opposite side. Sunset is a particularly nice time to experience the views.
