it was very big! there were reconstructed buildings of what was left from the last emperor. To enter the complex, you have to pay USD10, however it can be used to enter other sites in sagaung and ava.

This fort was rebuilt recently after it burned a few decades ago. Interesting if you need to figure out what a military camp looks like now. But the fort isn't interesting, the new pagodas are not the superb houses that stood here centuries ago.
Really not worth the time. Just empty buildings in the middle of military base - impossible to walk around.
Although the original palace was gutted down by fire the fort is a place to visit as it offers a walk down memory lane . Most of the beautiful moments are in December at sunrise when the red bricks face the rising sun
The outer walls of the fort are original, but the interior palace burned down after it was bombed in WW2. The replica is roughly faithful to the original in design, but it appears hastily put together and with nothing of the opulence evident in the only surviving original building - Shwenandaw Monastery (which was moved to beside Mandalay hill).
If you have a spare afternoon in Mandalay it is worth a visit, but if you don't make it, you're not missing too much,
