“A massive complex”
Review of Mandalay Fort

Reviewed March 8, 2013

The size & construction are impressive. It certainly would have been difficult to attack.
Again the insights provided by a good guide added to an interesting experience, both inside & around the perimeter.

Its an easy walk up here, all under cover steps with lots of rest seating and vantage points. There are the usual stalls selling souveneirs but the sellers seemed pretty lethargic the day we were there, only a couple of enthusiastic palm readers seemed keen for custom. We were staying close by at the Mandalay Hill Resort so this was very accessible for us.

I won't go here again. All you can do is walk up the road to the palace. The best views are from the outside as you look across the moat. There are some nice nighttime photos with the bridges, towers and reflections

It is a poor replica of what would have been very impressive. I have been to the musem in the grounds and that was the part that was worth seeing however I think that may be closed now. Check it out if you can as it has some lovely old costumes from royalty.

Mandalay Fort and Mandalay Hill dominate the city .. and it won't be far-fetched to say that they define this former imperial city. The Palace inside the fort is a replica. But walk along the ramparts where you can (large parts of the fort is out of bounds to visitors as it is still used by the Army .. Tatmadaw). More than the palace, it is the ramparts, the walls and the watchtowers that will leave an indelible image in your mind. And oh, do erad Amitav Ghosh's "The Glass Palace" before visiting the fort .. and imagine where young Rajkumar must have washed the tea cups .. was it under this bridge? or that one? For Orwell fans, the author as a young police officer once came here for training and stayed at the mess across the street from the moat.
