“look close for the gold”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 19, 2014

Outside it's dark teak carvings, but if you look close you can still see what's left of the gold. Woman are not allowed to go close to the Buddha, but you can still see it and study the 10 Jataka, telling his life stories.

“A MUST for all visitors”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 12, 2014

Shwenandaw is a place not to be missed, as it is the only sample of what the Golden Palace used to look like! It did NOT end up in ashes during WW II like the rest of the palace, as it had been moved to its current location. It's entirely made of teak wood and there is still gold on ceiling.

“spectacular”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 9, 2014

Although we did not like Mandalay city itself, this is another great reason why Mandalay should be on the itinerary on a tour to Myanmar. The Golden Palace Monastery is nothing short of extraordinary. Made entirely out of teakwood, one cannot help but marvel at
1) the massive teak pillars inside so tall, straight and uniform, they look like they were manufactured from a factory.
2) Exquisite 3D wood carvings in every single nook and cranny.
3) Intricate designs made of a composite consisting of cow dung! (see my photos)
It is a shame that the rest of the palaces were destroyed in WWII. We hope that the Golden Palace Monastery will be preserved for many future generations to admire.

We visited at an extremely quiet time. Lovely to wander around and marvel at the intricate carvings.

“Not so impressive”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 7, 2014

Although this is a "highlight" of Mandalay, it is not really terribly impressive. Indeed, Mandalay itself was a bit of a disappointment.
