“Not so impressive”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 7, 2014

Although this is a "highlight" of Mandalay, it is not really terribly impressive. Indeed, Mandalay itself was a bit of a disappointment.

“Great history”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 1, 2014

The Golden Palace Monastery is a wonderful piece of history. The history behind it makes it even more interesting. The wood carvings are all master pieces, unfortunately some have been stolen in the past-but replaced with replica's.

“Very interesting inside”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 19, 2013

This is a wooden temple, with very intricate carvings. The fact the wood is so dark makes it have a different feel inside. The usual golden Buddha is inside, but there are some interesting artefacts inside too.

“Fantastic because it is Original and Authentic!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 8, 2013

The Golden Palace Monastery or Shwenandaw Kyaung used to be the King's royal residence. It is made of teakwood and the architectural design is fantastic. The exquisite wood carvings are so impressive. This is one of the important historic and religious landmarks in Mandalay City.

“Red and gold palace”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 27, 2013

This is worth seeing so you can use your imagination. It is the only palace remaining of a complex of 114 palaces. They were all destroed in 1880 except for this one, so they offered it to the monks for their monastery. If you look closely you can still see some places where there are signs of some burnt wood. From here you can wander around just a few minutes and fing many other classic buildings in Mandalay.
