“Worth the Ticket”
Reviewed May 13, 2013

We didn't know if we should buy the govt ticket as we thought maybe the attractions would be boring. Glad we bought them! This is such an impressive building. All wood and HUGE. It's really quiet and there are monks around (we saw female nun too) which adds to the ambiance of the place. It was really dark inside so my eyesight didn't do well but it was still very very impressive. As we went in the off-peak season there weren't many people around which meant we weren't fighting for space - it was great! Very impressive structure

“Simply a Must!!!”
Reviewed May 12, 2013

The Shwendandaw Kyaung (golden palace monastery), is one of many must-see attractions in this extraordinary country and so little known by Westerners. Built by King Mingun in the 19th century, is an all-wood construction with intricate teak carvings of Budhist myths both on roofs and in walls. When it was built, was part of the royal palace and was used as the king's chambers Mingun. Your name (Golden Palace), due to the fact that its original color that covered the wood. In nowdays only the interior gold remains due to damage caused by the tropical climate on the outside. A visit to be made calmly, watching the stunning detail of the carvings.

“Stunning wood carving.”

Unlike any other monastery we've seen. Beautiful, intricate wood carving. This must have been stunning when first built.

“Quiet and magical”
Reviewed April 25, 2013

Quiet monastery with a beautiful teak temple. One of my favorite sites in Mandalay. We arrived just before sunset so the lighting was perfect and there were fewer tourists (who usually head to Mandalay Hill for sunset). We met a monk that wanted to practice his English as well who was very friendly and welcoming. Definitely worth a wander for the teak woodwork and interesting structural beams. A great off-the-beaten-path spot.

We found this building very interesting. The detail in the carvings was wonderful and to think it was once covered in gold is amazing. Wandering around the building was also very peaceful and quite soothing. Worth a visit
