Owner description: The Kuthodaw Paya houses "the world's largest book", 729 marble slabs of Buddhist scriptures.
Reviewed May 25, 2013

729 slabs of marble, each in its own 'stupa', set out the teachings of Buddha. A lot of work has clearly gone into this but unless you can read Burmese, it becomes very same same. Once you've seen one slab, you've seen them all.

It was really hot and over crowded and so the wait was longer than usual. There were 729 stupas each of which had a large marble tablet with scriptures. Originally, the scriptures were written in gold ink. There were lots of people so people watching was , also, very interesting.

Constructed in the reign of Mindon Min, this walled complex at the foot of Mandalay Hill is one of the royal city’s must-see temples, best known for the “world’s largest book”. Surrounding its gilded central zedi modelled after Bagan’s Shwezigon are small pavillions containing 729 marble slabs inscribing the entire Tripitaka: the Pali canon of Theravada Buddhism. Reading the whole text will take at least a year.

The sea of white pagodas is particularly picturesque at dusk, making it a perfect place to linger before watching sunset at Mandalay Hill. It’s excessively hot at midday and many locals picnic in the cool shade of the covered walkway. You should join them while appreciating its frescoes or buying snacks and souvenirs from the vendors.

Beautifull stupa and amazing array of stone-inscription caves around it. Very special and interesting place to visit
