Mandalay Hill Resort

Mandalay is a lovely city, in a country until recently overlooked by tourists, but to our surprise (mine and my wife) we stayed in a hotel far above average that rivals many trendiest hotels in the West. It lies at the foot of Mandalay Hill in a fantastic site. The rooms are very comfortable with all the necessary facilities, and complimentary wi fi. There are good restaurants, including an excellent mixed buffet (local, asiatic and international food). The best of the hotel, however, is its vast green area with typical charming decor, a very beautiful pool that changes color at night, with a bar inside, and a stunning spa. The service is attentive and the price fair

My friend and I stayed here as we booked it on AGODA as two days before our arrival to Mandalay and it was half price. They have a beautiful pool and outdoor areas and STRONG wifi with which to have limitless SKYPE conversations on with no glitches. Also the wifi (included in the price) is available throughout the hotel, which is a luxury in Myanmar.

The property is a little dated but we had all that we needed and very comfortable rooms, beds, bathroom, room service and the front reception desk displayed EXCEPTIONAL service in the form of a man named Tihn, who organised onward flights and found us a boat to take to Bagan where other people we met had been told that there were none that leave in the low season unless you charter it yourselves. Invaluable!

The breakfast is included for the price and is buffet and extremely varied. Top pic would be the Myanmar pancake is delicious.

You can hire bicycles which is a great way to get around town - so make the most of your stay at this fab place...

This is an excellent hotel - the best international facility in Burma, in my opinion. Service is excellent in all regards, as are facilities and surroundings. The western executive manager is diligent and takes great care to in ensuring guests'' comfort and well-being. Restaurants are good, and costs reasonable. I notice some complaints on this forum about the lifts - yes - there are 'only 2', however I didn't experience any difficulty with lift availability during my stay - and the hotel was full, as are all hotels in Burma these days. The Mandalay Hill Resort was just great, and I'd certainly stay again.

When planning our stop in Mandalay the first thing we noticed was that there are not a lot of high end hotels to choose from. The Hotel by the Red Canal was booked solid for our dates and we got a great deal at the Mandalay Hill through Agoda so we decided to go for it. The hotel was a very typical Asian full service business hotel. The carpeting was a little worn and everything in the hotel was quite expensive. Overall the hotel was fine for our needs for two nights and probably better than the other available options in Mandalay. We wound up booking a whole day tour in Mandalay with a local taxi driver for USD 35 and it was one of our best experiences of the trip. The driver spoke surprisingly good English, was quite friendly and took us to all the sights. If anyone is interested, I have his GMail address, feel free to message me and I will provide it. Bottom line is that this hotel is satisfactory but it is not going to "wow" you.

We stayed 2 nights at this hotel. It is fonctional, large building, with a good service. The restaurant is expensive for what it is and you have to pay the internet acces 5$ for 24 hours per unit... I guess this look like more a business hotel than a charming tourist place to stay.

Family of three stayed 2 nights and enjoyed it. Good location although walking to native ethnic restaurants apart from the hotel is challenging, especially in the heat and humidity of the city. The good news is that the hotel restaurant is quite good at reasonable prices for a hotel of this stature, although prices are relatively high by Myanmar standards. Staff, particularly in the restaurant, is very service oriented, although somewhat English challenged.
Room was large, clean, comfortable and quiet. Bathroom was surprisingly cramped, much smaller than would be expected for the room size. Room had a refrigerator, hair dryer, TV (which we did not use) and, importantly, very good air conditioning. Exercise room was more than adequate as was the swimming pool. A relatively minor annoyance was the requirement to pay $5 for 24 hrs of Wi-Fi and the restriction of using only one appliance at a time for that fee. You have to log off before another family member logs on. Breakfast was included for us and it was excellent.

Electricity suddenly went out several times during our stay, once +momentarily trapping us in an elevator for a few moments. Such outages are not unusual in Mandalay (and elsewhere in Myanmar) because of the lack of rain and deficient hydroelectric power. But the hotel has its own generator and the lapses are brief.

Can't comment on value because the hotel charges were rolled into a global fee we paid for our 12 days of private touring of Myanmar.

Until they have two elevators operating reliably this hotel should not get more than a 3 rating. Only one worked the week we were there.

The power flickered constantly, which I realize is probably not under the hotel’s control but the lesson is to take a shower at night. The water temps in the morning were lukewarm at best.

The wifi cost $5 for 24 hours of usage (not a calendar day). The signal was weak and the service slow.

We ate in restaurant twice. The prices weren’t outrageous for the style of hotel and the food was OK. The breakfast buffet was quite nice.

Note that the hotel is 4+ miles from what I would characterize ‘downtown’ Mandalay and there are few taxis in town. (There is no need for a domestic taxi service because everyone has a motorbike, etc. Our local guide explained that any car with a taxi sign on it was not likely actually a taxi but rather just appearing to be as a tax dodge.) It was recommended that if you used a taxi to leave the hotel you also make arrangements then to return.
