Mandalay Hill Resort
Ranked #10 of 118 Hotels in Mandalay
Reviewed January 19, 2013

We stayed at the Mandalay Hill Resort for 3 nights as part of our trip to Myanmar in December 2013. The hotel was nice/ clean/ glitzy...if not antisceptic. It could be the Mandalay version of a Hilton or Intercontinental. Meaning, it could have been anyway in the world...not necessarily in Mandalay.
But it was nice.
There was a gala buffet dinner Christmas eve around the pool. The MC announced the countries people travelled from. The 300 guests in the hotel were from Western Europe, America, Australia, Canada and more.
We had breakfast there 3 times. The breakfast room was beautiful as well as a beautiful array of foods....however the food was not tasty.
I recommend the hotel...it just wasn't what we were expecting for a 3rd world country.

Room Tip: Ask to face the pool and the pagodas (back side of hotel)

The hotel is located in the North of Mandalay and on the bottom of Mandalay Hill. I would not recommend to walk around - it's pitch dark at night and not much to see in the area during the day. The hotel itself is very 1970-style and probably has not been refurbished since then. My room consisted of various pieces of furniture pulled together - but it was very clean, the bed comfortable, bathroom and shower very good and despite the "old fashioned-ness" of the place I felt a bit like in an oasis in big and very dusty Mandalay. Reception is "grand", there are several restaurants - I dined in the coffee shop once a la carte and found the food and service excellent but very expensive. The gardens, pool and Spa area are lovely but there was some "tacky" party going on "pool-side" at night which marred the romantic settings and views to Mandalay Hill.

Room Tip: The views from the hotel are better than the "look" of the hotel itself - a multi-storey b...

Hotel is near the stairs to mandalay hill, round it, there is nothing to walk to.
But the hotel itself is very nice, modern, comfortable.
They have 3 expensive restaurants (one in the garden with buffet and show für 40$/person)
pool, spa. Breakfast was very good.
Room has TV, bathtub, safe, minibar, big bed.

2nd night there was a private party at the pool so staff had to take us thru the garden to the restaurant. Party with life music ended before the performance in the restaurant started.
Good service in the restaurant, you dont have to wait for you fresh made orders at the buffet, they'll bring it to your table.

Shabby chic. Hotel is a high rise near Mandalay Hill. Making it convenient to tour the hill and Palace which is also near the property. Nice to be slightly out of downtown (2-3KM) to return back to "calm." Also walkable villages and sites near. Has beautiful grounds in back as well as pool.

A bit over priced but most in Myanmar is at the moment. Was clean enough although it good be better maintained. Understand there are limited resources and went with the flow. Suggest the take carpets out of rooms and just have wood floors.

Food was good. Worth a stay at this hotel to be able to have Wai Wai be your waitress in the restaurant. She's amazing at her job and offers the best service. A very kind woman.

Elevators were of no issue to me. Seemed to work as expected. As did the TV and AC. Wifi isn't very good which is the general issue in the country. Was able to deal with it. If I returned to Mandalay I would stay here again.

Room Tip: Room on high floor.

You can see this giant and unattractive hotel from distance. This white structure is totally out of its element in this beautiful and natural surrounding. The rooms, facilities, and breakfast are average as far as hotel goes. There were a lots of mosquitoes inside the hotel even in our room. There is nothing else to do and to see within walking distance outside the hotel. It is a boring experience for us. But we love the staff there. They are great!

This was one hotel we were really looking forward to staying at and were very disappointed. We are a family of three and were not part of any tour group - the staff seemed fairly disinterested in us and whilst they answered our questions - it was not with the same level of courteousness as we had experienced at other hotels in Myanmar. Maybe it is too commercialised?

Room Tip: I would avoid their BBQ buffet - it was very expensive US$40/per person; whereas other hotels in Mya...

In a land where smiles and politeness are the norm the reception we got at this hotel was less than inviting. It is a high rise Holiday Inn type of hotel. The staff was not that helpful in telling us about the local attractions and asked us to speak to our guide. The hotel is not near any other local areas of interest and the Royal Palace is also not within walking distance. We had a corner room with views of the front garden but that is about all.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front of the hotel high up in the building may be sought
