This is one of the holiest if not THE holiest pagoda in Myanmar we visited during our Myanmar leg of the tour of five South-East Asian countries in 2018/2019. This is a huge complex which has many shrines and chambers which house many statues and relics from the past. The Mahamuni Buddha image (literal meaning: The Great Sage) is deified in this temple It is highly venerated in Burma and central to many people's lives, as it is seen as an expression of representing the Buddha's life. It is said Buddha's statue is layered with six inches of pure gold and it weighs twelve tones approximately.
Conservative dress code must be worn as we have to hire a 'lungi', a kind of sarang the local wear to enter into the temple.

We came here with our work local work colleagues, who went to the shrine to worship.

We awaited their return, after which we intended to walk around the pagoda.

When we were told we must pay 5000 Kyat we explained we would do but must wait for our colleagues. We pointed them out and were nowhere near the sacred area or the pagoda (instead in an arcade of small stores).

Security staff were aggressive in their demands we pay immediately. We left. Very disappointing and it seems it’s unlikely that It was in Buddha’s teachings to behave this way.

A must see in Mandalay. Conservative dress code preferred. Cultural and historically rich. Better to wear slippers and bring lots of wet wipes for feet

Very special experience. Our driver had picked the wrong entrance and there you couldnt buy a ticket, so while strolling around we were suddenly approached by the guards and excorted to the right entrance. A bit annoying, but of course we should pay the entance fee. Anyway really nice buddha in this pagoda. Huge amount of people due to full moon. Definately a must see. Go in the morning.
