This temple has the washing Mahamuni face ceremony at 4:30 in every morning, because people believe that the Buddha has given the life to Mahamuni image then they have to do this ceremony for every morning

By the time we got here we had seen a lot of Gold Buddhas, but this one was different. It was interesting to see the men applying gold leaf, and one day I expect the Buddha will just become a big gold blob. The Pagoda itself is clad in gold, but in a nice way (not tacky), and the grounds were peaceful and nice to wander in.

A definite must see if you visit Myanmar. It is one of the most important, popular and revered shrines in Myanmar. It is the most important shrine in Mandalay. There are countless number of pagodas in the country and at times you tend to be overhelmed but you still have to visit this pagoda to see the Buddha image here. The buddha image is decked in absolute gold and had an incredibly calming effect on us. Another thing, in many countries and locations accessability to important idols and statues are greatly restricted due to a number of factors, including plain bureaucracy, however with the Buddha image, it was possible to be very close to the Buddha image and even touch it. However, due to religious beliefs that close access is restricted only to males. Seeing the Buddha image at Mahamuni Pagoda, at such close range, was one of the true highlights of our trip to Myanmar.

A must see in Mandalay. Even if you have seen countless other temples around Myanmar, make time for this. The Mahamuni Buddha is one of the most famous Buddha images in the whole country. Its popularity has meant TV screens showing the Buddha image have been position around the temple for people who are unable to get up close. Women have to pray from afar, but if you're a man you can go up the steps beside the Buddha and try adding gold leaf to it with the rest of the crowd. Many people speak English & its a nice way of joining in with the locals.

We were some of thousands of people who got up at 4:00 in the morning to watch the ceremony of the washing of the Buddha. Well worth the early rise!!
