We were some of thousands of people who got up at 4:00 in the morning to watch the ceremony of the washing of the Buddha. Well worth the early rise!!

Don't miss the early morning (4 am) washing ceremony of the Buddha image, it's fantastic! Like stepping into another world

A working pagoda with MEN still visiting every day to apply gold leaf to the ever thickening buddha, at already 12 feet tall it is likely to reach 14 feet by the end of the decade if the gold leafing continues. It is strange that they do not allow women to approach and the ante rooms are beautifully intricate

Incredible to look at the pictures of what the statue of the Buddha looked like in 1907 when it was placed there and what it looks like now after decades of people applying gold leaf to it!

One of the most important and still active temples in Mandalay, the Mahamuni Temple is a medium sized complex with several buildings. The main building is elaborately decorated with especially beautiful saffron and gold arches . The famous Buddha itself is housed on a pedestal in a small chamber and only men are allowed to enter. Devotees are constantly visiting to add gold leaves to the statue and the face is incredibly shiny, due to daily rituals to polish it.

In another building, there are numerous paintings of historical and religious events and outside, there are some big and small bells where you can strike for good luck. Another small attraction are some bronze figures brought over from Cambodia’s Angor Wat in 1563. This temple is right within Mandalay and is worth a short visit.
