I woke u early in the morning and visited Maha Muni at 4 am to see the daily Buddha face cleaning. It was very fascinated to see local Burmese people gathering and pray.

School was out so there lots of local tourists especially children. The worshippers were quiet and pious. As it is done in all of Myanmar, you have to take off your shoes before entering a Pagoda and keep quiet as the worshippers were around. Gold is was very prominent. The architecture was interesting.

I loved this place. Its a bit further from the town center so you can get here only by taxi. Walking to the temple is along different souvenir and religious vendors. There are metal workers and outside a lot of stone carvers. Once inside as a foreigner you have to pay a camera fee. Besides the statue there is nothing so head directly there, its right in the middle of the temple. Women may not walk up to the statue and touch it! Man may only walk up to it if they have long trousers! The statue is so very gold! I walked up to it, touched it and set next to it. Some people offered me gold paper for free to rub in which was so nice of them. I loved this experience. Knowing also that this is one of the oldest Buddha images in the world. It's a must see! Pity my wife had to sit outside and watch the statue from a distance.

A dusk or night visit shines a light on the real Mandalay. The parks and pools behind are a great places to find a Monk who in exchange for a little conversational english practice will explain the significance of Mahamuni.

The temple itself is nothing special. The golden image is cool. The visit is free if you go before 7 am. It's really far to go just to look at an image for 5 mins.
