“Big. Gold. Important.”
Reviewed April 25, 2013

Extremely religious site, so best to be respectful. Many locals also come to escape the heat in the afternoon. Only men can place a gold leaf on the Buddha. Women have to stay behind a velvet rope. Don't miss the artisans working at the entrance of the Pagoda. Very beautiful handiwork who are open to talking about their craft.

“Very Religious site”
Reviewed April 21, 2013

An incredible temple and one of the holiest temples in Myanmar. It is said that the Buddha himself sat himself for the casting of the statue and therefore is the most accurate likeness of him, which is why it is considered so holy. There is a photo of the statue of what it looked like when I was first cast that is not to be missed. Unfortunately women are not allowed up close to the statue and all must wear long pants which is strictly enforced.

We enjoyed visiting this pagoda. While I could not get too close to the Buddha image as a woman, I found it interesting to sit and watch the local people as they went about their worship. The placing of the gold leaf on the Buddha by the men is also an interesting ritual. If you choose to visit, I think you will find it a worthwhile experience.

“Stolen Buddha”
Reviewed April 10, 2013

Originally built in 1784, destroyed by fire in 1884 and rebult. The Buddha stands 12'6" and has a complex history. 3 times the Burmese tried to steal it from the Arakanese and finally succeeded in 1784. There was a terrible battle to capture it. The image has its face washed and teeth cleaned every date at 4:30 am. The body has been distorted by all the gold leaf applied to it by worshippers. There are photos showing the earlier days of the Buddha, and you can see how it has changed. The face too has grown larger, even though this doesn't have gold leaf attached to it, so it is deemed to be a miracle. The gold leaf was shimmering as it wasn't fully attached, so occasionally they will put a coat of lacquer over it to keep it in place. The gold leaf make it look as thought it had fish scales.

“One of the top 3 pagodas in Myanmar”
Reviewed April 8, 2013

There are many locals coming here to pay respect to the Buddha. The golden Buddha statue keeping on growing bigger and bigger through the time based on the golden leaves. Note that only men can get close and put the golden leaves to the Buddha statue. Besides the statue, there are many ancient artifacts brought from Angkor area.
