Always a pleasure to watch the Mahamuni face washing ceremony. Crowded with people who are saying prayers, who are offering gold leaves to the body of the statue. The face of Mahamuni can look different from time to time. Also interesting to go and look around the pagoda campus including bronze statues. You could also buy handicrafts , souvenirs from shops along the corridors.

We went to the washing of the face of the Buddha in mid May and were the only tourists there. Had to leave our hotel at 330am which was a bit painful but the experience was lovely and unique. Not sure I'd go again though, may be a one time event. Be sure to dress respectfully with covered legs and shoulders and bring something soft to sit on if you get uncomfortable sitting on the hard ground for an hour.

We vistied this large temple, and this is where the Buddha is somewhat misfigured due to the amount of gold leaf applied. You need to wear long trousers or a lunghi to go up to the Buddha, you can 'hire' these for a few pence. Interesting to see, especially as no gold is applied to the face. Lots of stalls here to buy almost everything you don't need, as most of it is for lcoals, but its all very cheap if you wanted a mouse trap or some hankies etc.

This is the main pagoda/temple in Mandalay and a must see. As always get a local guide to give you the inside story. The attached marketplace on each entrance to the pagoda has some very good and cheap stuffs. Note when you buy always haggle.

This should be the first stop on your day-drive around Mandalay.

My favorite building is the one with the green roof.

There will be people selling paintings which I think are AMAZING. Made with a razor. Only 2 usd. Get it!
