“Interesting river trip to what I think you mean is the Mingun Temple”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 3, 2013

A 1 hour each way (approx) boat trip to Mingun is fun. If there are 3-4 or more of you then hire your own private boat (v nice) from the jetty at the end of 26th Street for Khat25,000 rather than pay Khat5,000 each on the public boats - you get tranquillity and can choose your own time to travel there and back. The Temple is impressive but no longer climbably since a small quake at end 2012; also see the Mingun Bell

“Boat trip worth the visit”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 12, 2013

The trip on Ayeyarwaddy river to reach this village is worthwhile. Historically this would have been a fantastic place however over the centuries, including not long ago, earthquakes in this area has very severely damaged what would have been and in a way is still a very impressive place. Almost like the pyramids in its grandeur. Since the most recent earthquake in 2012, the site has become extremely unstable and one is no longer allowed to climb up to the top. There are the obligatory vendors hassling you all the time but just avoid them. There is a giant bronze, I think, bell that you "crawl" inside. Also visiting the nearby village is worthwhile. However it is difficult to avoid the hassling vendors and in some ways in all of Myanmar this is the "most touristy" place.

“Good to see”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 5, 2013

The size of the ment-to-be largest pagoda is impressive. The site is touristic during high season but it;s doable. Forget any excitement regarding the Mingun Bell.

“Waste of time”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 18, 2012

The boat trip down the river costs 5000 kyat round trip. Then another $US3 to visit the sites. Very touristy and you spend 3 hours looking at only three things. The village life is more interesting then what is advertised. Climbing to the top was not permitted the day we were there. The constant harassment to buy trinkets, make donations to assist with schooling and to buy other unwanted items continues for the entire time you are confined in the village.
