“Ayarwaddy Riverview Hotel a good option in Mandalay”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 31, 2014

Let’s face it, Mandalay is a city. In fact it is the second largest city in Myanmar so finding a hotel with a relaxing ambiance is not so easy, especially one that is affordable. The Ayarwaddy Riverview hotel is a great choice especially if you request a room facing the river. Opened in 2011, Ayarwaddy River View Hotel is just 15 minutes to Mandalay center, flower market, and 60 minutes from the airport. Ideally located in the prime touristic area of Northern Mandalay, the hotel is in an easy access to the city's myriad attractions and landmarks, such as Mayan Chan Jetty, Thiri Mandala Bus Station (for Monywa, Shwebo), and Chanthaya Paya. The Royal Palace and Mandalay Mountain are do-not-miss attractions.
Guests are greeted with a welcome drink and refreshing towel. The accommodations are large and well furnished. Breakfast and the internet are complimentary. Guests can enjoy their pool, a massage, spa, fitness center, and other amenities. But what makes the Ayarwaddy Riverview Hotel stand alone is the rooftop dining room with a view of the river and setting sun. And, on most evenings at sunset they have “free-flowing” cocktails featuring the cocktail of the day. Plus, during dinner a man plays the traditional Myanmar xylophone. Following an hour of delightful music guest can enjoy a traditional puppet show. For more information check Ayarwaddyriverview-hotel.com.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a river view.

Apart from hard beds and some rooms with dodgy showers or drainage this is a good standard of hotel. What lifts it to 4 blobs is the rooftop bar and dining room. Stunning views of all the hustle and bustle of the street and river.
The downside of the riverside location is that the immediate surrounding area has abject poverty, especially the families living on the road /riverside. It's quite a hike to the restaurants, or else take a cab.

Modern hotel right on the river. Nice views from the rooftop bar and dinner area. This hotel is about a 20 minute drive from the palace so once here you basically stay. The staff organize cabs for you. Good breakfast buffet and spacious rooms.

I would stay here for the genuinely caring staff and the 'free flow' cocktails at happy hour each day. Whisky sour, rum sour - they are all great and the view from the roof is fantastic at sunset.

I was part of a geography teachers' tour group and as all hotels are pre-booked we don't know what we are getting until arrival. Firstly, the room was huge with lovely wooden floors but the bed was hard and the pillows harder. The bathroom was OK but the towels were almost threadbare. However, everything was very clean. On opening the curtains we were confronted by the roof pitch of the lobby and tons of pigeon poo, just hanging there. As if this horrible sight wasn't enough, there was a dead pigeon on the window sill. Needless to say we kept the curtains closed. We were only here for a couple of nights and all our days were booked up with great sightseeing so I just ignored it.

I am a seasoned traveller and not one to fuss, especially in third world countries - the people are all trying hard and our first world sensitivities are miles away from their daily grind to make a very basic living.

Breakfast was very good especially the lovely fresh fruit each morning. You will, however, need to take two cups of your tea or coffee as the cups are miniscule and would hold a third of normal size.

The fitness centre is really not worth your while unless you just want to lift a few weights. The pool looked nice but the weather was too cool at the end of each day to use it.

The staff are lovely especially the housekeepers who greet you so genuinely every time they see you. Yes, it can be noisy but Mandalay is a bustling energetic city full of fascination and new experiences for travellers. Go with the flow and breathe in the Mynamar culture.

Room Tip: Just avoid the first floor room above the lobby unless you are a pigeon fancier.

It starts with the location. It is on very, very busy street. The noise never stops. When folks in our group asked for a room on the other side (away from the river) they were told it was even worse. Upon entering the hotel for the first time you are welcomed by an employee with a tray of wet naps. They were obviously removed from the package and rolled individually. That's an indication of the degree of service. In the room you find threadbare and stained towels. In our bathroom they built a tiled moat around the tub. This left a 4" gap between the tub and the most so you could catch your wet foot in it. It was tiled to make it even more slippery. We only got hot water after letting it run for over an hour. We discovered this after starting the day with a cold shower. The sink aerator and the shower head were both clogged to the point that only small sprays came out. The safe was locked when we arrived and numerous requests to have it opened went unnoticed. The beds and pillows are extremely hard. All-in-all it was the worst hotel experience we have ever had and I would highly recommend staying elsewhere.

Room Tip: Stay as high up as you can and get a 0300 wake up call and turn on the hot water so you can take a s...

We arrived in Mandalay by ferry so the location of this hotel was very handy. It is a bit far from the city centre, however, but since cabs are not expensive this was not a major issue. The room was large and comfortable, though the bathroom was small and prone to flooding. The staff were very pleasant and the service was good.

Room Tip: Some rooms have a great river view. The corner room has a view of the river and the city.

Beautifully located, friendly and helpful staff, decent wifi, fantastic roof top views overlooking the river. Rooms were spacious and clean, but somewhat run down. Breakfast included too much sweets, but was acceptable.
