Ayarwaddy River Hotel is a very nice hotel opposite the Ayarwaddy river. From to hotel to central Mandalay is about half an hour walk. Alongside the river there are some nice restaurants.
The staff in Ayarwaddy River is very friendly and helpful. The rooms are spacious and clean. The top roof restaurant is good, with life music and a excellent view on the river and the city.
From the hotel, it is only a short distance to the ferry to Bagan.

the noise people complain about does exist, there's no doubt. The windows are thin and the street noise can really escalate at times (we were on river side, 3rd floor, but there is a main road between the river and the hotel). We drowned most of it out with the air con but did have some regular horn interruptions.

Otherwise, I really liked this hotel and overall decided that the noise was worth the other benefits.

The staff was really on the ball -- I had complicated room bills for two rooms over four nights (was there for work) and every single charge, from room service to laundry to mini bar, was accurate. They had good information when I needed it and were always pleasant, but never overbearing. Same with the bellboys and other staffers.

The food in the restaurant was quite good; best tom yum soup I've had, actually and prompt service. Breakfast good buffet with egg station, crepes, fruit.

The laundry was quick, cheap and good, rooms overall were clean, fridge and air con all worked well. Kettle nice to have too (though most Asia hotels have them).

Location is also good, close enough to town but if you are leaving town you can take alternate routes without going through center traffic.

Room Tip: I did not ever hear the monastery chanting people complain about; I would guess that it would be on the city side, so if you worry about it, ask for a high floor river view room. You will still have traffic noise though, on the river view side.

The good things first: the staff was great, breakfast good and the rooms spacious.
We had booked a room with river view - which we actually had (so no critique there). But what we didn't realize was that the road was extremely noisy (the Burmese people honk at every opportunity) and as the windows didn't have any isolation, sleep wasn't possible withour earplugs. So forget the riverview and try to get a room on the other side of the hotel.
Furthermore, the hotel is really outdated - although we know that Burma is open for tourists only since 2011, we've been to hotels much better kept. It was really disappointing - outworn floors, doors didn't close until you really banged them, the bathtube was leaking etc. Electricity was a lucky game, so you'd run the risk of getting stuck in the elevator.
We wouldn't come back.

To start with there is not much of a river view gracing the front of the Hotel. Right in front of the hotel is a fisherman slump. Also dont expect too much of a river view as the slump blocks your view.

To make matters worst the hotel is stuck in the north west end of Mandalay with no access to any transport any time of the day or night. If you need to go to the city you either have to book for a cab or hire the hotel car. Needless to say all these require extra charges on op of the normal ones.

There is nothing within on Kilometer from the hotel except slump dwellings. At night the roads are pith dark with no street lamps.

Unless you want to be imprisoned, stay away.
