“We were advised by locals not to visit since reconstructed using slave labor”
Reviewed February 13, 2013 via mobile

After destruction in WWII this palace was rebuilt in 1995 using forced labor under military junta rule. Although other world famous monuments (e.g. pyramids at Giza) were likely also built under similar circumstances, this felt too recent side it directly affected so many of the townspeople still present today. Perhaps in a few generations will be more appropriate to visit long after the lessons of the recent past have sunken in.

“rebuilt Palace , used as a military base”
Reviewed February 11, 2013

The original Mandalay palace burnt down during the war between the Japanese and the Brittish and was rebuilt with concrete pillars (not teak wood) and there is not much to see except how big it must have been. It is a fort with a wall around it with 4 entrances. Only one is open for tourists. The wall is partially lit up a night and that is very beautiful. The vast grounds can be best seen from the tower.
I think there are so many original monasteries and pagodas to visit that it is not really worth paying the fee and visiting this rebuilt palace. And military families still live on the grounds!

“Nice view from the tower”
Reviewed February 10, 2013

For reasons I'll not go into here, I hated paying the fee to get in. The grounds are not well kept and most buildings are not origional however you do get a good idea of what the place must have been like. The view from the tower is nice.

“Impressive moat and rebuilt palace complex”
Reviewed February 10, 2013

A large water filled moat and walled fort with a reconstruction of the original Royal Palace in the center. It must have been really something with it's 7 storey teak buildings, sadly destroyed by fire during fighting between the British and the Japanese.Definately climb the tower to get a good overview of the whole area.

“Great Fort”
Reviewed February 9, 2013

It was cool to see.
Good to see how the other half lived.
The palace was well guarded by brick, and the brick work is good.
