“Good location - lousy service”
Reviewed December 8, 2011

Very central location, free wifi in the lobby. That's the good things about Queen Hotel.
The rooms are large, but not very clean, a bit old and worn down. The air condition stops working after every frequent powercut. The restaurant is run by amateurs - yesterdays dinner leftovers will show up at breakfast. I had a group of sixteen people for dinner one night, and after a while the main courses was put on the table. Time passed, and the food got cold, but we hadn't gotten any plates or rice. After fifteen minutes we got up and went to get our own plates, which finally speeded up things. When we were finished, they brought the rice and side dishes.
Make sure to order your second drink well before you finish your first, because it will take ten minutes to bring a bottle to your table.

This hotel is not a bad option in a city that is famous for not having great hotels. The location is good with a money changer next door (the flight centre next door offer money changing for better rates than the hotel can organize). The room is a bit dated, but clean and we found reception staff very friendly and helpful.

For dinner I would highly recommend the hotel restaurant. We had a great meal there both nights we stayed. We tried to find a local restaurant the first night, but Toe Toe, marked in lonely planet, moved about two years ago and except for local barbeque options there is little outside the hotel.

I think for the price (cUSD30 for double) this is a good option in Mandalay. Our only complaint would be that we had dogs fighting in the streets outside the hotel during the night, although I know this is no fault of the hotel and is probably likely to be experienced in many Mandalay hotels - but it might be worth bringing earplugs…

Hotel Queen offers one the comfort and cleanliness of a mid range hotel in a large city with some welcome add-ons like a hair dryer in the room and free internet access. It's a typical boxy structure and not a place you would want to lounge around in but will meet your needs if all you want is a hotel to come back to at night. Their staff are friendly and will go out of their way to help you with a query.

We stayed here for 3 nights as part of our journey around Myanmar. After trying the Royal Guest House where we were shown a claustrophobic twin room where you had to climb over one bed to get to the bathroom we lost a bit of faith in the cheapies. So, we forked out $35 per night per room for the Hotel Queen.
The hotel was worth the money, especially as it was so hot when we were there. The air con worked a treat, the room - although small - was very clean and comfortable and noise was no issue. Staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast wasn't a highlight though - geared to the usual Chinese market and pretty uninspiring.
If you want to make the most of your stay in Mandalay you may need to consider upgrading to a guest house/hotel with good air con - some people that we met on the 'trail' really struggled with the heat and rooms with good air con at least mean that you can sleep well!
Location was good - central enough to be close to everything but still quiet enough for a good sleep. Restaurants and shops just around the corner ensure a cool -but rarely cold - beer is just close by!

We stayed at this hotel because our first choice was not available and we are not sure if it is government owned.

It is as most mid-range hotel in Myanmar – clean, modern, comfortable and characterless. However, we are impressed with the breakfast selection.

This central hotel offers comfortable accommodation at a reasonable price. Our superior room was quite large with an adequate bathroom. Breakfast was a Chinese buffet. Lunch and dinner are served in the restaurant. The food is fine and again reasonably priced. The reception staff were friendly. I can certainly recommend this hotel without any reservations.

The rates are relatively cheap but Hotel Queen is able to make our stay a pleasant one. The rooms are clean, well-lit and very comfortable. The only annoying thing is the electricity voltage kept dropping and the TV got cut off by the safeguard every five minutes!

Good variety of foods for breakfast and the same restaurant also serves dinner if ordered. However, the reception staff are vague when giving information about the city and its attractions.

It is located not for from Mandalay Zaycho, which a famous spot to visit. However, it takes a bit of driving when going to the palace or the Maha Myat Muni.
