I travelled to Tunisia for the first time with my partner and our two daughters age 4 july 2013 staying at the Thalassa Sousse.

We arrived in Tunisia and after waiting in a long ue for our visas we got on the transfer coach to hotel. Upon arrival we were told our room wasn't react and wouldn't be until half two, meaning we had to hang about waiting for almost 3 hours. Not ideal after the flight. I would have liked to get a quick shower to freshen up before exploring he hotel. The redemption did look after our cases while we had something to eat and drink. We then sat at the tables outside until our room was ready.

We were called after waiting a few hours to be checked in. You have to fill in a card with your details and are given some vouchers for free bottled water (one a day) the porter then too us to our room with our cases.

We had a bungalow, inside is massive. There was a double bed and two single beds and the bathroom is very spacious too. With a really deep bath and a shower on wall. There was plenty of storage space although only one socket although I read this before and took an extension with three sockets :) the rooms are a big dated although clean The maids came daily with fresh towels made beds and swept floors. If you have a bungalow you have a garden like part and later if kids where tired they could have a sleep and we could still lie outside. Also a couple of days we had a lie in and then stayed in our garden and the kids played with a ball ect.

Food was average, usually find something to eat ie pizza, pasta, chips, salads. I usually find all inclusive is much the same standard.

The slides and pools are brilliant. My oldest loved it. If you want a bed near pool you have to be up early. Although can alway get one on grass if your a late riser.

We decided to venture out near the beginning of our holiday which we found to be a mistake. After getting out the taxi we were approached by a man who seemed to recognise us from the hotel said he was a waiter a the Thalassa. He said it was his day off and he would show us down the the main shopping area BIG MISTAKE TO TRUST HIM!!! He took us to a shop selling jewellery they locked the doors and refused to let us out until we bought something. They told us to sit and proceeded to put necklaces bracelets ect on us when we said NO they got angry. Having two kids with us I decided to buy something and get out. After leaving the same thing happened again, an elderly man saying he worked at hotel. We realised they must know the all inclusive bands and pretend they work at the hotel to get you to their or their families shops. We decided to go back to hotel and only went out once again after that to eat out and got taxi there and back. We ate out at The Saloon stake house which was nice although they don't have kids menu so my 4 year old had to order an large adult meal.

The entertainment was ok not the best ive had. I didn't use kids clubs, so can't comment on that. All the staff were amazing and couldn't do enough for us, they even squeezed fresh orange for our drinks lol which was nice. We did tip the bar and waiting staff every few drinks and they wouldn't let us get up for our own alway brought them before we were done. We had our own waiter at meal times and we tipped him daily too. Maids we tipped at the end of each week and porters we tipped at the beginning and end.

Overall we had an nice holiday. Hotel is nice and clean (as I said before rooms could be doing with refurbishing) Staff where amazing. Although I dint think i will be returning to Tunisia again.

I've tried to be as honest as possible as I read some really bad reviews before I went. I didn't know what to expect. Hope this helped.

We went to Tunisia for my 30th birthday, the main reason being a stunning two-day desert trek through the Sahara. It is a MUST-DO experience and if you are visiting Tunisia you will not get the full benefit without this. It's grueling - early starts, loads of walking, but is absolutely brilliant.

So, the hotel was rather supplementary to our plans. We took a punt on Thalassa as it had ok reviews and was reasonably priced.
Overall the stay was good. The pool area is lovely, the hotel is clean and well maintained, facilities not bad, the staff - particularly a bar lad called Slim - were incredibly friendly and helpful.
However, our chalet room - which was nice and clean, basic but perfectly pleasant had a few issues.
There was a bit of an ant infestation, the TV only had foreign channels (no English - but great if you are a German speaker) and our air con didn't work.
Over the course of our stay we reported this to our Thompson holiday rep, our cleaners, the check in staff and hotel manager and were only moved to an air conditioned room after kicking up a stink on the very final night.
It was a shame because we highlighted it repeatedly and Tunisia in August is HOT!
Tip for you: avoid Ramadan month. The staff and locals are fasting and get a little tetchy.
Food and bar facilities at this hotel are a disappointment.
There are three bookable restaurants but these were booked out on every occasion, no matter how early we tried. So we were forced to eat in the English restaurant. The cook, Dave, is a great guy, good stories, and tries his best with limited ingredients but Im afraid to report the meals were not fantastic. Free food - but dubiously cooked eggs, tiny red sausages and broad beans in tomato sauce were pretty much the staple.
The pools have a bar and there is a bar inside but, despite being all inclusive, and the brilliant bar lads milling around the pool area bringing you new drinks, I felt let down by the small selection, tiny drinks in tiny plastic cups and no cocktails.
The pool is fantastic for families But be warned. The sun loungers are all "reserved" with towels before 8am. There is an entertainment team, called Animation, who break into dance routines and encourage you to play various sports throughout day. This can niggle if you are trying to read or just relax. This is not a hotel for solitude. But if you have kids, don't mind a bit of a buzz or are that way inclined (one of those sociable types) then you'll enjoy it.
There is a lovely private beach as well with free sun loungers and amazing views. But you will get the odd salesman trying to flog you merch or boat trips while you sun bathe.
There is also a big water park with scary flumes and rides. This is set back away from main hotel complex but you get free reign of it. Me and my girlfriend had a lot of fun taking on some of the terrifying drops in rubber rings.
Tunisia is not a rich country but there are gems to be found if you look.
We got cheap cabs easily to and from the hotel to the beautiful port el kantaoui with its rich boats, restaurants and bars.
Again, be prepared to bat away a few street salesmen and kids flogging posies. But good place to get a cheap straw hat and fake Ray Bans.
Overall, Tunisia - specifically the Sahara Experience - was incredible.
Hotel Thalassa was ok. Good value, nice place to stay - just don't expect all the trimmings, beautiful food and endless flowing alcohol - because you won't find it here.
What you get is a good value, clean, friendly hotel with loads of swimming pool activities, beautiful weather and a lovely private beach. Good location too.

Room Tip: Triple check your air con and ask for HOTEL manager asap if it's not working.

Most of the flights into Tunisia are morning which poses a problem straight away when you arrive at the hotel as check in is 2pm - this is not noted anywhere and when you have had a 2 hour airport queue to have your passport and visa checked you do not want to then wait around for 2 hours just to get into your room !
We travelled in October and it was still very busy and very hot - YET no air con ! this only runs between june and september ?????? As a result we had the room doors open and were eaten alive by mosquitos - easily solved with some spray but annoying more than anything as it was still very warm and we struggled some nights with no air con
The flies !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And then more flies - there were hundreds on everything and although the bars and restuarants were cleaned daily by the end of your sitting or the afternoon the flies were abundent and the bars outside in particular very sticky !
Apart from the above and the odd bad day with the all inclusive the staff were great and the rooms very nicely done out and cleaned daily
The different restuarants is a good idea but the food wasnt that much better or different to that in the main all inclusive and I would say that breakfast was the worst meal..........
Very modern hotel with some areas needing attention but not overly noticeable
The best bit for us was the beach which is private and beautiful topped off with the beach front cabana and restaurant/bar where the waiters after one day rememebred you and your drinks :)
Tipping is a big must and the staff deserve it as they do really look after you
We relaxed totally and there were plenty of children around but they tended to stay by the pools and the water park which looked fantastic and very good to keep the children entertained
Overall it was a short transfer with great weather and location along with it being a large resort so you didnt feel like you were doing the same every day/night :)
I would recommend and the price of £400 pp ai for a week was good value :)

Room Tip: There are only a few rooms that are on a higher floor but we had a room away from the beach where I would think the mosquitos were worse but all in all most rooms looked the same - small bungalow style :)

This is the second year we've Been here great the first time but now with the new water parks its greater even The food sometimes is not the best but if you buy a mini don't expect a rolls royce plenty of choice. We had a bungalow down near the beach which was kept nice and clean and all the staff were very helpful and curtious. Wish the air conditioning had been on rather hot at night Booking again for next October bringing more family members along one thing that was lacking was some decent evening entertainment except when the ruskies got drunk entertainment. In itself can't wait for next time

We booked this hotel specially because of the water park, and that was great fun for the boys of ten and thirteen years. Otherwise we have divided feelings for it.

Standard room was small and really basic, only one chair, even that very small. Bed was good, however. Balcony yes, bathroom quite large and ok. There was safe deposit locker in the room but it was opened next day only and charged. Air condition was shut up from end September for the cool winter period but in the first week 11. - 17.10.13 there was day temperature + 35 C and in the nights well above 25 C and humid, so A/C had definitely been necessary when rolling around in soaked bed sheets. -Was there A/C in the rooms advertised in the hotel info of travel agency net pages for this hotel? The rooms were cleaned daily and that part of the service was ok.

Restaurants: Food was always the same regardless of the restaurant of your choice of 3 or 4 of them, There was constant shortage of plates, glasses and cups in the main restaurant. The purpose seemed to be that the waiters fetched the drinks to the customers tables but the waiters were obviously to be tipped to get proper service of drinks or you had to queue up in sometimes very slow and long queue. It looked that with extensive tipping you might have the drinks served in glasses to your specially reserved tables with flower decorations, sometimes surprisingly even in the wineglasses.

The bars served drinks as promised but quite often in plastic cups.

Evening programs by animation team were mainly under any expectations and standards, and we have seen them in almost ten years in El Gouna Rihana so there is something to compare.

The public areas were spacious and furniture large of size but cushions dirty if not filthy both inside and outside on terraces.

The hotel was marketed as four star but according to our experience, only the white tablecloths in the restaurant, spacious public areas and the new water park represented that level. All the rest was far behind this standard.

However, we had a good holiday with our daughters family and their boys for the first week mainly due to the water park facilities and crepes and pizza available. The second week we spend more on golf course and reading.
