My friends and I stayed at this hotel for a week, and we honestly didn't want to leave after that time.
It's a 4star hotel, and is perhaps not that in British standards in terms of the rooms which are very basic. However, there is nothing left wanting from them: air conditioning, comfy beds, large bathrooms. The shower head would not stay on the wall but all that meant was holding it to wash, which isn't uncommon. Our room faced out to the pool and was a 10 second walk from the main pool and reception area.
The animation team were brilliant and enthusiastic, they try their best to get everyone involved, have a variety of games and activities on offer and if you're not up for it, will leave you be. These guys work all day and then do a dance show at night. The show is not always great but the ones featuring the animation team dancing are good, and they have to cater for all languages. All of them speak English, as well as Arabic, French, German, Polish, Russian etc, and are really great to interact with.
Some people have written about problems with the food, however I didn't have any problems at all. The only problems we found were with our vegetarian friend, as some of the dishes were incorrectly labelled at the buffet but if you ask a waiter then they are very helpful. The food caters for all the european tourists, so includes a lot of food you don't often get in Britain, but if you just want pizza and chips every day, there is that option too. You can also book in to eat at the 'a la carte' restaurant, the tunisian restaurant or beach restaurant all of which are well worth a try. Although we found the service to be quite slow in the 'a la carte' restaurant.
The hotel has loads on offer. In addition to all of the animation team's activities you can go on a trip to the medina (old town) with a member of staff for free- you get taken to a carpet shop and have to sit through all of that first but there is no pressure to buy, once you tell them you're not interested they leave you alone. Then you have an hour or so to wander around on your own. The guide is always around and stops any scams that he sees happening, such as a man trying to sell us fake jewellery. The hotel also has it's own bit of beach, where you can pay extra to do all sorts of watersports.

All in all, my friends and I had a great time, no major issues and would happily return again.

we stayed at the thalassa sousse from 17/06/2012-01/07/2012, the hotel itself is very nicely set out, the accomodation we stayed in was very nice, as there was 8 of us we were given 3 bungalows with a lawn outside the size of 3 tennis courts, which was great for my grandchildren to play, the pool was less than 50 yards away and our sunbeds were reserved for us everyday by the lifegaurds for which we gave them a small tip, the bar staff were fantastic as were the restaraunt staff (a little tip goes a long way)we never had to queque for a drink nor did we have to wait, the entertainment team was fantastic as was the kids club keeping kids and adults entertained all day.
THE DOWNSIDE:
the food in my opinion did not reflect the standard of the hotel, the freshly cooked food queques were so long that you could not be bothered to wait and the rest of the food was warm but not kept up to temperatures we would expect in UK, the "A-la-carte"(from the menu) is a total waste of time, you are allowed one visit per week but you are given a set menu of 5 courses if you dont like any of the set menu you are not given any other choice.
they have a new director at the hotel and there was a lot of suits during our stay trying to improve service should they succeed in sorting out the food this would be a perfect hotel to stay in, but until this happens be preparred to eat out.

Room Tip: try to get a bungalow

We came back from the Thalassa Sousse on Sunday 1st July having spent 2 weeks at the hotel.

We were travelling as a party of 4, myself and my husband, in our 50s and my father and step mother, 70s.

Before I start, I would like to thank Hassan at the beach bar for the magnificent way he looked after us. Nothing was too much trouble and he made us feel like VIPs. Also thanks to Moussa in the main restaurant. He realised that my father and husband have mobility problems and always made sure we had a table that made life easier for them. Thanks too to Mona on the customer relations desk, she is a real treasure. Any problem, she is the person to see and she will do her best to make the problem go away.

The Tunisians do seem to like the Brits and we found all the staff friendly and helpful. Please remember, they work very long hours and are human too. They appreciate the manners that we Brits are famous for and a please and thank you cost nothing but go a long way, especially as they spend most of their time having orders barked at them by the Russians. Their language is Arabic, with French as a second language but most of them can also speak English, German and Russian too. How many of us who can speak multiple languages would expect to work as a hotel waiter from dawn to dusk? Not many I think.

Anyway, We were allocated adjacent rooms in the main block. What a disaster. The rooms were less than basic, pokey and below the standard I would expect Thomson to offer their guests. The bathrooms are tiny and if you are over 5 foot tall, you cannot sit on the toilet as your knees touch the wall, there is no window or extractor fan. The shower heads do not stay on the wall in any of the rooms as far as I could ascertain. The bath is half sized so you cannot get your top half into the water. The only way to clean yourself is to sit in the bath and use the shower head like a hose. There is no power point in the room at all. These days we all need a power point for something, for me it is the travel kettle, phone charger x 2, ipod, DS and camera chargers. The only power point is in the bathroom where the hair dryer is plugged in. I have been to Egypt several times so understand that standards are not the same as at home, however, I would expect very basic safety standards in a hotel that is being sold by Thomson. Having to use a power point by the sink in the bathroom is well below the standard I would expect and plain dangerous. There are no fridges in the rooms, which in a hot country like Tunisia I would expect to be a basic requirement, so, diabetics beware, it will cost you 10TD per day to hire a fridge to keep your insulin cool.

We had not been impressed by the food on the Sunday when we arrived, but it was only the first day, so hoped it was just a bad day. The first breakfast revealed what we could expect for the holiday. Eggs that were supposed to be hard boiled, labelled as "5 minute eggs", fell out of the shell as an uncooked slop. Freshly cooked eggs, were available but there was only 1 poor chap cooking them and the queue was long.

That morning we asked the rep, Dan, to upgrade and move us to a doss house !!

The customer relations manager, Mona, was called. She is lovely and couldn't do enough for us. We were then offered a couple of bungalows by the "relaxing pool". A small pool, right near the beach. This was more like it. The rooms are a good size with a power point and with a decent bathroom with a window. The maintenance man had to come along and he eventually managed to get the shower head to stay on the wall so that we could have a shower (all the rooms and bungalows have a shower over the bath arrangement), the bath was also a decent size so that you could have a bath.

The site is huge with bungalows everywhere, the grounds are beautiful, the pools are gorgeous, we used the one outside our door every day, it was heaven and a wonderful way to cool off. The beach is wonderful, clean and sandy with lots to do, parascending, jet skis, banana boats and other things pulled along by speed boats. Not a great place for anybody with mobility problems or buggies as it can be a long walk to the main restaurant and there are a lot of steps. You can avoid the steps with buggies and wheel chairs by walking around the main block but it is a long walk, slightly uphill and it is very hot.

Now the real problem, the food. A lot of it can only be described as lukewarm mush. Labeling above the dishes was often wrong, for example, "chicken pie" was a pie crust with brown meat underneath. Most of the meat was poor quality, fat, gristle and bone seemed to be the order of the day. Fish is plentiful, but it is just labeled "fish" no idea what sort of fish it is. A couple of times meat that was labeled as beef, clearly wasn't, it was probably goat or camel, which is fine, but it should be labeled as what it is. We always found something to eat but it was mostly chips, pizza and pasta. The food seems to be of a standard that the Russians are happy with. We ate at the beach bar every lunch time, the food was decent and hot, but virtually the same every day, but it saved the long walk to the main restaurant for another helping of mush. The cakes and sweet things, in complete contrast, were beautiful, well presented and delicious. Having said all this, Mona told us that there was a new chef and I have to admit that the last couple of evenings of our stay there was some improvement.

You are allowed a bottle of water for your room every day and are given vouchers which you exchange at the main bar for your bottle, but you can have a bottle of water for your table at meal times which you can take with you after the meal, which means carrying half bottles of water around with you but at least it means that you get water for your room.

There is a safe in every room, but it costs 3.5 TD per day to use it.

There is a TV in every room where you can get BBC world news and we watched the EURO 12 games, but you pay 20TD for the remote control, I am not sure if this is a deposit or if this means that you have bought the remote and can take it home with you!

The rooms are all basic and getting a bit tired but clean with fresh towels every day, beach towels can be obtained with a 10TD deposit.

Drinks at the pool bar and beach bar are served in plastic cups, the sort you buy at Asda or Tesco, not the disposable type and they make everything taste of plastic. Some of them look as if they have been chewed by every child that ever touched them. We refused the plastic kiddie cups and managed to get glasses to use as we were sat at tables, not on the sunbeds.

When we were there we were 4 of about 100 Brits. The Russians seem to be in the majority with a lot of Germans and some french. The Russians are rude, pushy, arrogant and seem to think that they have the divine right to be at the front of the queue for everything. The staff at the hotel seem to dislike them for their rudeness and will often tell them to get into the queue. They also seem to have the instincts of locusts and will flock around food like a plague of biblical proportions to get to anything on offer and will eat absolutely anything.

All in all, we came home craving some decent food, but tanned and relaxed and a few pounds lighter than when we arrived.

1 last tip, there was a stomach bug going around while we were there. Forget English medication, immodium etc. There is a pharmacy just up the road, get the local medication, an anit-bacterial drug, it works quickly and is very cheap. The pharmacist speaks English and is very helpful. It is a Tunisian bug and needs Tunisian medication to get rid of it!!

Room Tip: Get a bungalow and refuse the rooms in the main hotel.
