“Great holiday! Cheap and cheerful!”
Reviewed May 7, 2013

I feel the need to comment after reading all the terrible ones on here. A holiday is what you make it and you definitely get what you pay for. Yes the hotel is slightly dated and basic but its 3*! If you expect the ritz this isn't the hotel for you!
Straight from arrival I found the staff so helpful and attentive and we're fantastic with my 2 year old daughter. On our last night a few waiters had decorated our table with petals and candles. The food is ok and not inedible. Even though we were all inclusive we still ate out a few nights. I would definitely recommend the saloon a steak house about a 15 minute walk from the hotel. The food is incredible!
The resort itself I found quite dirty and felt very uneasy walking to and from the medina and I would never have walked outside at night alone. Also beware of locals stopping you in the street and saying they work at your hotel (they can see it on your wristband) or drove your bus transfer/taxi. Its a con to get you to go into their shops! We fell for it the first day and ended up being surrounded by pushy tunisians asking for money. When I said I had none one man insisted I got in the car with him, left my daughter and partner there and went to get my credit card from the hotel.
We decided to have the camel trip offered by the hotel and I would strongly recommend it! Well worth the money and you're back at the hotel for 12pm!
Id definitely go back to tunisia but probably not sousse. Even though the hotel was great, i like a holiday where I can go off and explore but I genuinely didn't feel safe to do so (And ive been to turkey alone a few times)
Id definitely say take all the bad reviews about this hotel with a pinch of salt! After staying in the hotel myself I think the reviews say a lot about the people who wrote them. If you want a cheap and cheerful holiday with some (almost) guaranteed sun then the Karawan is the place to go!
Thanks for a great holiday guys

Ok ....The hotel is a bit like a kickback from the 70's....but then so is Tunisia generally. Don't bother me I love the 70's.

Its clean the food is above average and the Staff try hard.

The Entertainments Team(Animation....what kind of stupid word is that ) need a little bit of direction but their heart was in the right place(note to myself....I have a successful entertainment business in the UK..maybe I could travel to some of these places and give them some ideas on a consultancy basis??)

The manager/owner is called Bob and went out of his way to help on a number of occasions. He knows his Hotel is not Mecca (pun) but his personality wins you over.

Slides and Pool are great. Room adequate. Staff outstanding to a man/woman.

Sahara Trip is amazing but it is an awful long time on the coach. Its sold on the evidence of the Sunrise...that aspect of it was a non event...expected the Earth to move....but it was just the same as here. The sun came up...so what?? However actually being in the Sahara was moving.

The Holiday is not built around people getting wrecked all the time. Its very cultural and the majority of the staff and people around the hotel are devout Muslims so avoid alcohol.

Its two distinctly different holidays. One side you have the hustle and bustle of a vibrant city...and the other the tranquillity of a paradise type beach. Most would go for the Beach Side holiday. It costs a few quid extra to get a sea-view...but is worth it ten times over.

I'm scoring this highly....cos I want you to go!!

We have just come home from the karawan hotel. We have had a fab week. On are arrival at 3 in the morning we arrived worn out. We got to our room and felt a little disappointed. But in morning seemed different the room was clean if a bit tired. We had clean towels each day . The food was not bad something for all. As we went on you could see work was getting done in hotel. It was hubbies 60th on 30th April they made a fuss off us And a cake . The lads doing entertainment tried hard to make you happy. Those lads work really hard long hours for little money. The manger took time to come talk to us and liked some of our suggestions. You could see he was trying hard. Don't forget you get what you pay for this was a good cheap holiday with a friendly hotel we would go back .

We stayed here from19-26 April on an all inclusive basis. We only paid £220 each so wasn't expecting The Ritz. The rooms were adequate and clean, there were no hair dryer , fridge or ironing facilities. The food was not up to much but you could normally find something edible and it did seem to improve as the week went on. The staff were pleasant especially the barman by the pool although the entertainment staff were irritating and very unentertaining! We found the resort dirty and rundown with very little to do especially if it's raining like it did for our last four days. We found a nice steakhouse called Farmers about a 15 min walk away. There is a shuttle service down to port el kantouie which was nice. Sousse is not a good place for all girl parties the locals gather in small groups hassling you every 10 yards trying to make out they are a chef in your hotel only to take you to a mates shop! The drinks in the hotel were ok and outside was about £2 a pint. Overall it was just worth the money, fortunately there was a good crowd in the hotel so we had a good laugh but won't be returning to Tunisia

just returned from karawan 17/04/13 - 01/05/13 had a really enjoyable time, clean tidy rooms, fresh towels and room service daily, brilliant view from balcony, over looking beach/sea.went all inclusive, food was edible if you were prepared to try, it was a bit repetative but on the whole was worth the money.be aware of the scam the locals try, making out they know you and they work at your hotel. just be very firm and say no thank you and they will leave you alone, staff were fine no probs at all, had a scrub etc in the hotel, absolute bliss, massage was very good, nothing like a turkish bath at all,we did two trips one to a zoo then a african dance with a meal, wasn't very good meal was very poor, second trip was the light show with meal seriously give this one a miss, meal was poor light show was shocking. overall for what we paid would go again

Room Tip: get a room facing the sea views are great

just stayed for one week at this hotel full board basis first it took us three hours to get from the airport to our hotel it only took that long to get from Manchester to there would recommend using a taxi it's so cheap and much quicker. There are no tea making facilities in the rooms there was no entertainment at all really just four silly young lads going around the hotel thinking they were funny ( NOT). The food was always cold and nearly always the same there was always something you could find to eat though the staff were very friendly and the room was clean the shower was very good and hot. The hotel needs some up lift and bringing into the 20th century apparently I have been told sinse that Hammemet in a much better place if your thinking of going to Sousse

I stayed at this hotel 20th April for one week with my two daughters. The hotel has very tired loooki ng rooms but they are clean and are in the process of being renovated. The owner of the hotel was very concerned we had aproblem with our room, we were given a choice of another two rooms, he made a point of speaking to us most days to ensure we were happy and when we were waiting to leave he found us to say goodbye. The staff were friendly and hard working apart from the two guys on reception, they seemed stressed and unhelpful.
The outdoor pools were chilly but we still had a dip in them, but the indoor pool was like a bath. The entertainment was a bit ropey, it is held in an outside room, this is also the disco.
The food was ok, not gourment, but edible, there is a microwave to use to heat your food if you want it warmer, we used it for the soup on occasions.
would recommend a visit to the spa we had a treatment consiting of steam room, a body wash, exfoilating, a mud peel the a massage, heaven. Steer clear of Ali Baba and his trips, not sure if they are licensed and have insurance, we booked trips with our rep and can truly recommend the two day trip to the sahara, lots of travel on the coach but you get to visit El Jem, oasis, a camel ride in the sahara, the salt plains and kairowan.
We had some problems with the locals, a trick they used to gain your confidance is that they tell you they are your chef, coach driver, salad chef and they know what hotels have what coloured wrist bands so that also throws you off guard, we were caught out the first day and ended up in the medina looking at carpets and jewllery and being pressured into buying something, difficult to convince them you didn't want anything, and their mood quickly changes when they realise that you are not going to buy anything. All in all a great holiday apart from the 3 days of gale force winds and rain, not the hotels fault!!

Room Tip: sea view room, away from traffic
