Just got back from a week at this hotel it is a 3 star and no more. The hotel itself was clean and and the cleaners were very good, giving you the little extras of designing sheets etc., in your room and the room was of a decent size. We were on the ground floor, had a lovely little garden area. It was noisy at night, other guests didn't seem to care about others, shouting and banging of doors along corridors. All the staff were friendly and a few tips with the waiters and bar staff made it worthwhile. The Animation team worked hard and worked hard especially Rosti (spelt wrong) one of the team was over the top and became rather annoying. The pools were clean and the life guard was really helpful. The beach was a let down, a small sandy area in front of the beach bar/restaurant and then a lot of seaweed (natural I know) which I see them clear some, on one day and then it is was just put on one huge pile. There was entertainment during the day and every evening. The only real problem we had was the food, usually we are not a fussy group of eaters but there was 2 evenings where I only ate chip sandwiches and we ate out one evening. There was a lack of taste in a lot of the food, or it was extremely greasy. The breakfast was ok. To be fair other guests appeared to like the food. I would go back to the hotel on a room only basis. You could use the facilities in the Royal Salem - I had a massage, had better. Outside the hotel was shops, set prices, taxis very cheap. Did not go to the Medina, as done this before and I find them too pushy.

We were six ladies who spent a week at Marhaba Salem. As always you are anxious when booking any holiday. Our hotel was lovely and clean. The food was good and considering they are catering for a lot of nationalities they have their work cut out for them. The pools are salt water but very clean and we never had any issues. The entertainment team are great fun and worth getting to know. The staff are all friendly and try their best to help you. We booked through Thomson's who provide an additional tour guide called Fetty who can take you to the markets and help you with haggling. Well worth it. We had excellent weather. The sea could be cleaner but that is not something the hotel can control. Our only complaint and again not the hotel but the country is that there is smoking allowed everywhere and we found that we didn't want to sit in certain areas inside as it was full of smokers.
We visited the Medina as our only outing and it was worth going, if you want good value carpets it's definitely worth a visit. Make sure you don't accept the first price at the Medina.

We stayed at the Marhaba Salem mid September. It's the first hotel in a long time I've come away from thinking I'd like to go back. Our room was fine, a little on the small side, but you don't go to Tunisia to sit in the room. The bathroom could do with a little bit of work - cracked tiles and the sealant could do with replacing, but overall, the housekeepers worked very hard to make it clean. The food was great. I'm not a fussy eater at home, but try to eat "safe" food while I'm away to ensure I'm not ill - within a few days I was trying all sorts of things! The restaurant was clean and the staff were friendly. In fact we found all the staff very friendly and helpful without being sleazy which, as two women travelling together, we've found in the past. It is defintely worth tipping the staff. We didn't do it every time, but by tipping on the beach we always got sunloungers, and we always got the table we liked in the restaurant. The beach is tiny and is shared by all the hotels on the complex. You do need to reserve loungers early. The wi-fi didn't work while we were there, but the rep said we could pay to use it at the Royal Salem. Despite the rep recommending the Gelato place for ice cream, he didn't mention we could get free wi-fi there which was a bit annoying as we only found out when we got home. We were told about the "free tour" at our welcome meeting and were hounded by the guy about going on it for the first few days until I got fed up and made it clear we weren't interested. Then he didn't even acknowledge us as he walked past us! There are sellers on the beach, but they don't come up to the sunloungers, except the water sports ones, but once you say no, firmly, but politely, they don't bother you again which is great. The sea is quite seaweedy, but only near the shore, once you get out a little bit it's fine - and the staff work really hard trying to clear it away. The animation team work hard, they're not for me unfortunately, and the loud music and constant shouting gets wearing - as a previous reviewer said you know exactly which songs are going to be played in which order!
In short, good food, great staff, beautiful weather. I'd definitely go back.
