The tourist souk is just that but if you wander into the side souks it's a different matter. Follow the locals.... We went to a terrace café just under the Archaeological museum, it was horribly dirty but a great view over the medina.

We took a shared taxi from El Mouradi Palace to Sousse city and it stopped right at the entrance to the Medina. We didn't go to the grand mosque but to a fortress nearby with a tower, where we can see the whole Medina. We walked to the other end to visit the Mosaic museum. We also visited two museums, one being the model of lives in the traditional way and the other being a house of old Sousse. We were told that the Cistern couldn't be entered and could only be seen from outside and so we didn't go there.

The area is not particularly beautiful. There're some people trying to talk to us and persuaded us to look at or buy some items. The area is not dangerous.

To enter the Medina, it is free but some attractions inside the Medina charges entrance fee.

Not my favourite place found the stall holders very intimidating and you were hassled wherever you went. we knew this would be the case so weren't surprised as this is part of the fun of Tunisia. We were there in January and I think this could have been the reason as there were not many tourists about so you were easy pickings. After saying that it is a fascinating place with lots of history and lots to see. The Soula Centre is ok but we found that you could get similar items cheaper at the shopping centres out of town. We got all our leather goods etc from the shop in the hotel(Marhaba Beach) and from the Seville Centre which is just by the Tour Kalef. Also be warned that when you go to Sousse by either the little train that runs between Port Al Kantoui and Sousse or by Taxi as soon as you step out you will be approched by 'bus driver', 'hotel waiter' cleaner' chef' etc. Be warned they are not who they say they are and will take you for a small fee to best place to buy. Be warned you will be pressurised within an inch of your life to buy and they can get nasty if you don't. Be warned

Visited in August 2012 with wife and two boys. It is definitley not for the faint hearted and you need to have your whits about you.

It is hot, crowded, dusty and slightly uncomfortable but it is also quite a lot of fun and a good way to kill a few hours and pick up some holiday tat and some stuff you never knew you needed.

Be prepared to say no and be prepared to haggle. Never accept the first, second or even third price offered and if you really don't like the price then walk away. It helps if you do this a few times to get a idea of the average price and then you know whether you are getting a bargain or not. e.g. my youngest wanted a hat that started at 90TND and was eventually bought for 30TND.

I would go again tomorrow as I got quite into and got some nice stuff. My wife wouldn't!!

I spent many days here a great place for shopping and seeing the local life of Tunisia and real Tunisian life.
Be prepared to haggle and also some hassle from local men trying to form relationships....
