For the least 13 years we , and a large group of friends , have enjoyed our stay of 6 to 8 weeks at this hotel . As regulars all the staff look after us very well and can speak English excellently . Food is fine and there is always a wide choice and quality is good .

The location is close to the sea where there are plenty of sun beds free of charge .

There is building work in progress but these improvements will enhance the facilities .

The guest relations officer works tirelessly to please everyone and the fact that so many guests return annually speaks for itself .

The cost of approximately £1000 for two people for 6 weeks is tremendous value .

We stayed in the Tej Marhaba Hotel for 1 week in May, and for the money it was great, But as for Tunisia (No thank you) the hotel was a bit dated but the pool was lovely and the sun was fabulous. It was a 4*hotel but I’ve stayed in better 4* than this one . Tunisia is not a place I would go back to.

This was our first holiday alone without the children so no expense spared on our part. Nice first thoughts on entering the hotel. But as you get settled into your holiday you notice the flaws. Half the hotel was closed and looked like a building site (which according to the locals had been like that for some time) half the facilities we're open/working. The locals and the lifestyle were shocking. Strap dogs line the streets. Glass along the beaches. We couldn't leave the hotel as we were approached every time being offered drugs. NOT A NICE EXPERIENCE. Would not return.

Sorry you didnt enjoy your holiday. Am not aware that half of the hotel is closed, now, or anytime during your visit, all is functioning except for our new spa centre which is not yet open.

Just got back from a lovely Christmas holiday at this hotel. The staff were great, spoke English and were easy to understand. The entertainment team were absolutely fantastic, which for this time of year I was not expecting. The hotel made a great effort for those celebrating Christmas with decorations and a Christmas meal. The food overall was great and had no problems. Do not understand when people have said the men are "sleazy". If you speak to them and continue conversation, yes they will of course reply. If they compliment you, either walk on by or thank them and leave it. They do not push anything and do respect your wishes. Overall had an amazing week here and am looking forward to booking another holiday here with the same hotel.

Terrible hotel but the handling of my complaint and claim for compensation from Thomas Cook is the real issue here! I am still waiting for an official response to my complaint made in September despite chasing via e-mail and phone on 5 occasions. The only communication I have received so far is that they are 'dealing with my complaint'. Trying to contact them via phone is almost impossible unless you're prepared to wait on hold for over 30 minutes at your own expense. Please see the details of my complaint below:-
On arrival at the Tej Marhaba our rooms were not available and we had to wait 1 hour before we could check in and have our AI programme made available to us. The hotel required full refurbishment. Carpets were stained, frayed and in places loose and dangerous, baths had chips in and rust areas, phones were not working in rooms etc. On arrival there were no towels in any of our rooms and no pool towels were available either and our first experience where pool towels have not been included on an AI programme. On trying to get a drink at the bar we were notified that of all the bars/ restaurants in the hotel only the Central bar was available to residents on the AI programme. This was staffed by a number of employees, however, only 1 at any time was serving drinks and another issuing receipts for signature – again another first experience for us on AI. This led to long queues and up to 20 minutes wait for a drink during the day – it could be longer in the evening but we gave up and went to bed. The attitude of the bar staff was disgusting, when being served they would grunt ‘drink’’, ‘what do you want’, and then on being handed the drinks in child size plastic cups they would bark ‘numbers’ – their way of asking for our room numbers for the receipt that we then had to wait for to sign. If people didn’t immediately understand this procedure then they would be shouted at!
The way that the drinks were poured was also disgusting – for example a gin and tonic would consist of 80% gin with very little tonic – when asked to repour the drink with a small amount of alcohol with a large amount of mixer an additional small glass of mixer was poured and set down in front in you.
The grass was long, the shopping arcade was closed down with graffiti displayed on all the empty shopfront windows and the whole hotel had a feel of neglect. The route to the beach was down some stone steps, passed some refurbishment works which we had been informed of previously and therefore was not an issue, however, the stream of sewage which crossed our path further down the lane was offensive and unacceptable. The route to the beach also consisted of a main dual carriage type road which was extremely hazardous to cross and spoilt any feelings of rest or relaxation we would have expected to experience during our stay. On arrival at the beach (where we had to cross another foul smelling stream) we were told by the hotel employees that unless we had a tip for them we couldn’t have any loungers or drinks from the beach bar. I challenged this eventually having to promise to bring a double tip the next day in order to get 6 loungers for our party. Again at the beach bar lager was served in ridiculously small plastic cups with only 1 allowed per person at a time and the same level of service was experienced as at the Central bar earlier that day. On arrival back to our rooms towels had still not arrived even though reception had been notified earlier in the day. Another trip to reception, a phone call to housekeeping and another wait occurred before towels were delivered to our room. On arrival at the buffet restaurant for dinner we were told that as a party of 6 we were too big to accommodate at 1 table. As we had booked the holiday as a family holiday (saved for and the last we are likely to have) I explained that this was not acceptable. The waiter made a big fuss of pulling tables together and scraping chairs across the floor before putting dirty used table linen down for us. Again I explained that dirty used table linen was not acceptable and asked him to replace it with clean. The waiter removed the dirty linen, turned it over and replaced it on our table. Again I said that this was unacceptable only to be told that if I wanted to eat as a 6 then that was my only option – needless to say we didn’t eat at the hotel that night. After leaving the buffet restaurant I went to the Thomas Cook office within the hotel to get a number to call a local representative. I tried the local office number which I knew was closed in the hope of obtaining a mobile number of a contact – unfortunately no number was recorded. Eventually out of desperation I called the UK emergency assistance hotline and explained our situation. The representative agreed that the environment was unacceptable and she would e-mail the local Thomas Cook office immediately so that they could action our request to either fly home or move hotel the next day. The following morning I rang the local office and spoke to Jo who was really helpful. She explained that no e-mail had been received from the UK as the system was currently down but that she would start looking for alternative accommodation for us. She requested that I went to see Louis the hotel Thomas Cook rep at 10.15 before the welcome meeting to see what alternatives were available. Louis said that accommodation had been found at the Marhaba Beach and suggested that I visit it before making a decision. I visited the hotel (at my own cost – having arranged my own transport) and found the hotel to be clean and welcoming – a far cry from the Tej Marhaba. I visited Louis again after the welcome meeting to confirm that we would like to move and he said that he would arrange it. We moved hotels late that afternoon and were extremely happy during our stay at the Marhaba Beach. The day before leaving we checked the Thomas Cook board for our coach pick up which stated that for the Bristol flight the pick up time was from 6.45. We arrived in reception at 6.30 only to be told that our coach had been and gone without us! We had to arrange our own transport to the airport as I guess that no internal resort communication had taken place to confirm that we had moved and where we required pick up from.

have stayed at this hotel four times a year now in January the rooms have been upgraded to what i would say is nice and comfortable with new tv with 3 English channels on 1 news 2 moves food is hot and lots of it morning noon and night
bars are good in door pool has been out of action for 2 years but has just reopened which it sounds like its been well worth it
the staff from the restaurant bar cleaners and front desk are the best all ways there to sort what you need and are so nice
i am back in January for 25 days in 2013 so see you all then
don't believe all the bad revues as you get what you pay for and at £11 pounds a night HB board its very good value in January

We stayed here in November when the hotel was very quiet - no queues at mealtimes or at the bar, and plenty of sunbeds - it might well be different in high season.
The hotel is in a great location, just a few minutes walk out of the back of the hotel to the beach, and to the promenade walk along the front to the town centre (20-30 min walk), from where you can get trains to Tunis, Monastir, Mahdia. Taxis are cheap & plentiful.
The public areas of the hotel are well maintained, if a little dated - there are several bars (very smoky, as everywhere in Tunisia) and a large central lobby with bar & entertainment area, opening out onto a nice outdoor patio area overlooking the pool. The outdoor pool seemed clean, we used it most days. The new indoor pool complex was not yet open when we were there, but it looks like it will be lovely.
The bedrooms are not so good; they are pretty spacious, with a seating area and a furnished balcony, but the rooms are really in need of refurbishment, especially the bathroom. Everything in our room worked (& when we had a problem with the door lock, it was solved very quickly) but just rather shabby.
The staff we came across were all lovely, pleasant and helpful - there were no obvious requests for tips, & we felt it was our choice to tip the waiter, pool staff etc every day. The reception staff were extremely helpful when we had a problem with a trip.
The food was fine, it all appeared fresh and well prepared. Although breakfast was much the same every day there was plenty of choice; freshly cooked eggs, omelettes, pancakes, cooked items, fresh bread, croissants, toast, salad, cheese, yoghurt, tinned fruit, squash, tea & strong coffee (which you got used to after a while). Dinner was much more varied, with Tunisian & international dishes on the menu; generally 2 soups, plenty of salads, 5-10 hot main dishes, cakes, fresh fruit & ice cream. You would have to be extremely demanding not to find something you liked.
There was entertainment of some sort most evenings, which was generally not to our taste, but not compulsory! One evening a week was "Tunisian evening" with Tunisian food in the restaurant, and local musicians and dancers - worth a look if you have nothing better planned.
Overall this hotel was great for our purposes, for a base to go on trips and go visiting Sousse and other nearby towns. It's not The Ritz, but it is extremely good value for money.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back overlook the pool and sea, rooms at the front overlook the road and town, but they...
